The best night of the Monday Night Wars
What do you think was the greatest night during the Monday Night Wars? The night which both RAW and Nitro put on stellar shows and were both more than worth seeing?
Since I know at least SOME will go there, the buyout night (last Nitro) doesn't count. ![]() |

It would be hard for me to say, because we had Nitro on a 2 week delay.

Rick Rude being on both shows in the same week was "pretty jokes".

November 23rd 1998 was a great night. WCW featured an amazing match between Rey Mysterio and Kidman for the Cruiserweight Title, Kevin Nash ending the winning streak of Wrath, and Goldberg and the Giant facing off in the main event.
The WWF featured a great overall show that ended with X-Pac vs. The Rock with Shawn Michaels making his return to join the Corporation. |

Best of Raw 2009 DVD....I don't think I can justify paying 19.95 suggested retail price for only 42 minutes on a DVD

Probably the night Mankind/Mick Foley won the WWF title for the 1st time. Nitro was doing decent in rating and as a show that day and then just tanked the main event due to that announcement.
RAW was decent as well and basically built the whole show in anticipation of if Foley could beat The Rock in their hot feud that got better over time. |

For me it was probably the night Foley won the belt because I kind of feel like I was apart of history a little bit. They always talk in the documentaries about the WCW basically selling WWE's product for them that night becauce Tony talked about Cactus winning the belt so nobody had to change the channel. I was one of those many people that switched over to WWE to see Foley win the belt. Kind of a cool experience seeing as how they talk about it all the time being a pivotal moment in the Monday Night Wars.

What Meatball and Narc said. Interesting to note that at the same time Mick won the championship, WCW was re-airing the "Finger Poke of Doom" from Starrcade.

God, I think that could have been such a huge angle for WCW had it not been fucked up. Woulda loved it if Nash, Hogan, Steiner, Luger, and Hall kicked everyone else out of the nWo and it was just them. Then, they could have really kicked the Goldberg/nWo feud off with Goldberg having to go throw each member until Hogan would face him for the title. That could have been the main event storyline into the summer for WCW. Especially when you throw in other faces that coulda been on Goldberg's side (Bret Hart, Sting, DDP). |

For me it was definitely the night Foley won the title. I remember watching back and forth and all of a sudden while watching Nitro they mentioned about Foley winning the title. I never turned back to Nitro that night. Everyone knows that that match has my favorite pop for a match when Austin came out and everything.

The night Goldberg won the title, it also was the night Undertaker wrestle as Kane which I had no idea until he took off the mask. Taker challenge Austin for the title but they were forced to be a tag team first by Vince that started the angle leading towards the most successful Summerslam of all time. The energy that night was crazy and both companies deliver, it was the height of pro wrestling.

Fuck, can't get over how bad WCW got fucked when Goldberg broke his hand/wrist right after this angle started.
![]() Everyone likes to point at the Fingerpoke of Doom as the beginning of the end for WCW but I still think it coulda been a tremendous angle if Goldberg hadn't injured himself. Sure, WCW might not have reclaimed the top spot in the ratings, but it woulda been better than the shit they started doing after Goldberg went down. :foc: |

Kinda ironic that I support that angle in retrospect, when just the other day I posted how Sting going over Hogan at Starrcade 1997 shoulda been the end of the nWo. But I guess this could have been the surprise reunion of the original nWo (along with Luger and Steiner), after a "one year layoff".

We always talk about this but people forget the year after Sting vs. Hogan Starrcade match was the most successful year in WCW history. Ending NWO would of lost them a ton of money. NWO Wolfpac sold the most tshirts in wrestling that year according to Meltzer, more than DX,Austin, etc.
Hogan drew money with Savage,Warrior and Goldberg and even DDP,Leno,Rodman and Malone. His heel character was worth more than Sting. He wasn't replaceable, Sting was replace by Goldberg,Nash and DDP. NWO was just too big to end. |

So what was Bischoff trying to get done with the announcement of Foley on Nitro? I mean, why would he announce it? was he thinking that maybe if he told people what is going to happen on RAW they won't change the channel?

Basically. He'd given away Raw results before. He figured if folks knew what was happening that week on Raw (WWE taped every other week at that point, IIRC) then they would have no reason to tune in. Major miscalculation on how many people appreciated Foley.
