Xbox 360 or Playstation 3
Thinking about getting one.. what is better?
Also is there anything 'newer' coming out sometime soon that I should just wait for? |

XBox 360 by a bit. I mean, yes PS3 has Blu-Ray, but it also only has a scattered few hit games that are actually quality as well as exclusive to PS3.
XBox 360 has a slight graphics edge, and a ton of great games, as well as XBLA and Live itself, if you care about those sorts of things. |

Why does everyone say 360 has a slight graphics edge? Where is this proven? I'm not attacking you I just genuinely want to know.
In regards to the topic I love my PS3 for the traditional Playstation controllers, Blu ray, and free online. I don't use online much, only now and again for Fifa so I'd be pissed if I had to pay for it. But everyone has different preferences. |

The PS3 is hard to program for. The 360 is relatively easy by way of comparison. In games where the PS3 is the lead platform (Burnout Paradise), the edge goes to the PS3. But most games are still 360 lead. Both systems are still flawed. I remember Ubisoft mentioned it had to make concessions on both systems for Assassholes Creed. Again, the nod in technical terms tends to go to whichever platform they designed it for primarily. For exclusives, there may not be a lot of interest, anyway. I don't really like HALO or Metal Gear Solid, for example, two of the major hitters for their respective platforms. In fact, I can't think of a single exclusive for the 360 I've given a crap about since PGR4. Maybe there's one I'm not thinking of. PS3, on the other hand, at least has Uncharted 2, which I want. And Infamous was fun until I played it for like two hours straight and got bored. Still, unless you really want it, a single game probably doesn't change many things, so check the exclusives to see if they even register. Funky also mentioned TPWWers. Well, my choice is kinda locked anyway, since all my friends who game have 360s. I don't know if this affects Wigga, but it may. Both thePS3 and 360 are supposed to still be around until at least 2012, to answer the original post. Both consoles have new Wii-style hardware coming out, Project Natal for the 360 and something sorta similar for the PS3. May not be a dealbreaker, or even of interest, but it's the closest to new hardware we're actively expecting. |

I have both, and I have to say I do prefer the PS3 still a little, however I'm trying to acclimate myself to the 360 and it's controller since I'm gonna let my brother take the PS3 to his apartment when he finishes school. Truthfully there's no big difference that I see, most games come out on both systems now and ones that don't generally get a similar title (ex. Forza and GT) somewhere down the line if they are successful. Most games now are supposedly developed on Xbox and ported over to the PS3 since the Xbox is easier to program for so the XBox games are supposed to look better since the game was designed for that, however I keep hearing people say in the future the PS3 will feature the games with the superior graphics (although I seldom care about or even notice stuff like that).
If it was me I'd see which games you want as far as exclusivity goes and get whichever one has the most of those. The rest is pretty equal. |

i dont even know what kind of games id like
i have a ps2 but havent played it in like 4 years but i remember i liked fifa world cup, GT4 and grand theft auto, but some friends keep talking about call of duty and stuff so i reckon i might want to play that so you have to pay extra for xbox live but on ps3 its free? are the games the same price on both platforms? does the xbox break down more often or something, i see heaps on ebay that are 'red rings of death' or something?? |

If you like GTA and plan on getting GTA IV, you'll need a 360 to get the full story through exclusive DLC "The Lost and Damned" and "The Ballad of Gay Tony".
Edit: Both of those DLCs are excellent, btw. Last edited by Drakul; 11-11-2009 at 11:28 AM. |

Games are all mostly $60 for PS3 and 360 now.
Call of Duty is out for both systems as are most first person shooters which seem to be the hot genre right now. You have to pay for XboxLive but PS network is free, but live is supposedly better. I don't play online so I can't tell you if it is or why. Older Xbox's frequently get a red ring of death and you have to send it back to Microsoft to get it fixed. I actually got mine off ebay for like $40 since it had the RROD and sent it back to MS and they fixed it for free. I don't play either all that often, but I only had 1 problem with my PS3 (like a week after I got it, but I restarted it and it's been fine ever since) and the 360 has been fine ever since MS sent it back. The newer 360's are probably more reliable but I have no evidence either way, they have changed the hardware in them several times so hopefully it's fixed. |

To the OP, it's all preference really. Depending on what you want makes the choice easier. Do you want a console for just you or a console you can play online with buddies? More people play games over XBL than PSN from what I've noticed. I've got MW2 and my XBL friends list was 95% CODMW2 and then 1 random asshole playing Hannah Montana, but still, if you want to play with more people, go 360. Either way you can't lose as both systems have their respective good points. Just don't buy a Wii. |

The thing is if you want to play online with the Xbox 360 you will need to purchase an internet adapter right? And it's like $99 or something.

I have both consoles but I only use the PS3 for PS3 exclusive titles and Blu ray....other than that if a game is on either of the two consoles I play it on Xbox.
Only game im better on PS3 at than xbox is Madden but thats because I played madden on the PS2 and PS1 in all the past. Like said above both have advantages and disadvantages. It just goes to what exclusive games you feel you want better and if you want free online and blu ray over paying $50 for online. Another big difference as already states is the failure rate. My xbox has failed on me three times in three years. I just got my PS3 so no failure yet buy my cousin had his for little under a month before it crashed due to playing a dvd. |

Things that haven't been brought up:
1. Wigga is Aussie. Prices may or may not be the same down under. 2. For certain games, you're gonna have to import them, Wigga. You know how your government hates blood ang gore or violence or anything fun in a videogame. Talk to Hasney, he knows more about region codes and gaming than I do. 3. XBox Live does cost money but the servers are maintained by Microsoft, and not the individual game companies. This makes it easier to have stable connections and it means that no matter how old a game is you can still play online. There's no profit in a game company trying to maintain servers for games that don't sell a lot anymore. Plus, it really only works out to a few dollars a month. And if you don't play online, you can still use a silver account for downloads and such. 4. Multiplatform games tend to run better on the 360, since the PS3 has a bit of a hardware flaw that prevents it for reaching its full potential. That's the graphics edge damninator was talking about. Problem is that it's not always a graphical issue. Sometimes it's sluggish gameplay. Depends on the game, really. 5. If you're looking to play TPWWers, most of us have 360s. Check the thread stickied at the top to see who has what. 6. 360 has way more games in general. And a lot of them are cheap now or are at full on bargain bin prices, but that's true of both consoles. Apparent;y the PS3 is the console for sports titles, but the 360 has the FIFA series and Pro Evolution Soccer/Winning Eleven series, and a new Ashes Cricket game too. Dunno if American sports will interest you much. 7. 360 is backwards compatible with any original XBox title on this list. Early PS3s were compatible with PS2 games, but later ones are not. I have heard that an update was coming that would make newer PS3s backward compatible too, but I cannot confirm. 8. PS3s use standard SATA hard drives. You can pop the old one out and put a much bigger capacity one in if you like. You can also actually view the internet on a PS3. 360s use proprietary hard drives and have Netflix in America and Sky in the UK. 9. You don't necessarily need the wireless adapter for the 360. You could just run ethernet cable from your modem or router to your system. 10. You said you liked Gran Turismo 4? PS3 has Gran Turismo 5 Prologue out now with the full Gran Turismo 5 out next year, and 360 has Forza Motorsport 2 (for really cheap in most stores now) and Forza Motorsport 3, which just came out. |

It really depends on what you want to play. If you really 'don't know, I'll play whatever' get one of the newer 360s that have the Jasper or whatever.
I was really quite torn between the two when I bought my PS3 a few months back, only thing that really set them apart for me was MLB 09 (which had great reviews, exclusive to PS3). The Blu-ray player is also a bonus. |

thanks for all the replies
makes the decision that much harder haha.. I'll see the lead up to xmas what kind of deals are out there, I work for an electrical retailer so I get a nice discount, and if stuff is on sale it generally means I can get it below cost. If I wanted to buy a PS3 tomorrow I'd get it for $440 - it costs the company $470 to buy it in. But now I kinda want a 360... Ahhhhhhhhhhhh But then I also worry I'll never play it if i got it... Anyway thanks guys, been a massive help, esp. Funky - you pretty much answered exactly all the things i wanted to know |

They both have the exact same fucking games. One is really expensive and the other one gets so hot that it will melt the materials it is made of and breaks a lot. Nothing has changed in this discussion in the last 3 years.

1. Both have exclusive titles. Both have exclusive arcade titles. Both have backward compatibility with older console games which include titles the others don't have. Would be truer to say the have many of the same types of games. 2. PS3 dropped to $299 finally. Reasonable. 360s have much better internal parts now. 3. Other than constantly expanding libraries, impending motion controls, added features and integration with social networking, television and movie rental companies nothing has changed. |

Guessing everyone here who has gotten the rrod has gotten it on the old models tho. And the reliability of the old models is irrelevant to the debate, since he'd be buying a new one.

I mean, it's not the issue some make it out to be, but it is still an issue and should probably be taken as a factor. The thing is, with a 3 year warranty against it, it's definitely less threatening than it was. And faster turnaround. But my buddy has had a console for just over a year, and it RRODed on him. The newer models are not immune. They are, however, safer. The PS3 is still safer hardware. All that being said, I'd probably still get a 360 over a PS3 if I had it to do over, but then, I also bought two or three (Can't remember) PS2s, as well. |
