Disk read error off XBox 360 hard drive

So I talked to Kane Knight and Mike last night and they were both stumped by the problem I was having.
I recently borrowed (with a view to purchase) a 20gb hard drive from my mate, I installed it last night and the system recognised the hard drive.
First thing I did was to install that Last FM and that worked fine off the HDD, then I went to install some demos.
The AvP demo downloaded fine and loaded up fine until it went to load up the level and it came up with a 'disk read error', saying that I had to take the dick out and give it a clean.
Downloaded another couple of demos and it says exactly the same thing before the game loads up.

Think the hard drive is broke?

I guess you could try it in another 360 to see if the same thing happens.

How about games? Can you install a game to the HDD and play the game afterwards?

But anyways, I did a quick Google search and pretty much NOTHING like your situation came up. The one I did find (http://www.giantbomb.com/xbox-360/60...ors/35-267951/) had 2 guys saying they had the same problem, with one of them e-mailing Microsoft, but getting the standard guess-without-reading-the-problem response.

Never heard of this problem, but yeah it's obviously the HD. No idea what you could possibly do other than calling M$.

I do not have dick on my mind at all

Yeah I searched that on google too and that came up with the same searches.
My problem is I can't get to another 360 device at the moment, suppose I could talk to some guys at a local games store. See if they have any ideas.

I haven't tried that yet, suppose I should give it a shot.
I've cleared the cache on the HDD and that didn't work, I've deleted and re-installed the demos.
I've taken out the HDD and turned on the system without it in etc.

Occasionaly, mine would give me that message when it overheated instead of the 3 rings. I'm not saying this is the solution but you might have to crack it open and vaccum out the dust.

Do you get these problems when you play actual discs?

He doesn't, I asked. He tried game discs and they play fine.

Anyway, Danny, only crack it open if voiding the warranty doesn't matter to you. People who are tech savvy and don't mind spending some time on their units can do it. People who are lazy, as I am, on inexperienced probably don't want to be doing anything that risks them being unable to get MS to service it.

Of course, you're also in the UK, so their policies might be slightly different. We like to let corporate rights ride bareback over our once-smooth sphincters.

Nah, once that warranty stickers gone there's no service.

You can send it in and try though. Friend of mine got a refub 360 from them after sending them a broken modded console

If the hard drive itself is fucked though, it's time to turn that 20GB drive into a 250GB one.

Thanks for the advice from everyone, as sometimes happens with these things it seems to have sorted itself out.
I'm going to keep an eye on it and I know the guys at the 'Game' store at my work so they would be able to help me out, said they may sneakily swap the HDD for a new one.
I wouldn't try to crack upon the system, wouldn't even know where to start.
