The Mainstream Media and Eddie's Death (Rant Alert)

Now I find it quite annoying that I can't seem to find anything about Eddie on TV or the radio. I searched through teletext and there's nothing there. News bulletins. Nothing there. The only place is wrestling sites on the 'net. Could you imagine if one of the talentless little fuckwits on shows like 'Big Brother' died? It'd be all over the media, probably front page of the papers. The only deaths I've seen in the mainstream media was a page spread in The Sun when Davey Boy Smith died and a little bit about Owen. FUCK ALL ELSE in my 15 years as a wrestling fan.

It's times like this that it really narks me being a wrestling fan. Are people ever going to take wrestling for what it really is, pure escapist entertainment?

It's no different to people watching soap operas or movies yet wrestling gets a bad rep and no respect 'cause it's all fake' (which is another thing that really get's me going). Now I know I'm stating the obvious here and many of you may feel the same but I feel like this everytime a wrestler dies and it really grates me. I just wish it was different. Eddie Guerrero touched the lives of many, many people yet he won't be remembered the way he should be remembered by anybody outside of the wrestling world. If Sir Paul McCartney died tomorrow, the whole world would be paying respect and remembering him as a great songwriter, musician and for being fantastic at what he does, a legend, even people who didn't like his music. Wrestlers don't get anything like that.

Will this ever change? I hope so but I may be waiting as long time.

(I apologize if people think that this is daft post. I didn't think it really fitted in with the tribute threads etc. Anyway thats my rant. Thank you for reading)

Wrestling's Huge Loss
Tuesday November 15, 2005 3:00AM PT

Eddie Guerrero

Known for its extravagant pay-per-view blockbusters, divas, and smackdowns, the world of professional wrestling suffered an unexpected loss this weekend. Popular wrestler and star of WWE Smackdown, Eddie Guerrero, also known as "Latino Heat," died in a hotel room in Minneapolis this past weekend. Vince McMahon, the chairman of the World Wrestling Entertainment league called Geurrero's death a "huge loss to WWE."

In an industry dominated by theatrics, nothing seems to stop the show like the death of one of its stars. Searches on Guerrero shot up 16,568%. Other related terms in the Buzz include "wwe news" (+432%), "wwe wrestling" (+363%), "wrestling news" (+315%), "pro wrestling" (+180%), and "wwe" (164%).

Wrestling was a family business for Guerrero. His father, Gory Guerrero, has legendary status in Mexico and in the Southwest wrestling circuits. His nephew, Chavo, is another current WWE wrestler and frequent partner.

During his 20-year career, Guerrero had been a masked luchador, a bad boy with "lie, cheat, and steal" as his motto, and most recently a clean-and-sober, born-again wrestler who took the WWE Champion title from opponent Brock Lesnar (+213%) in 2004.

In the upcoming week, WWE plans to broadcast tributes, and Guerrero's family will be holding a funeral in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ultimately, the show will go on, as Guerrero may have wanted it. We expect that the buzz, too, will continue as more news unfolds on his untimely death.

Maybe it's starting...

Well, Eddie was big in wrestling, he was never a star any where else. So it isn't suprising. Owen got in the papers because it wsa a huge tragidy at a wrestling show, that made Vince look bad because he kept the show going.

Eddie died of natural causes, and his death, to the non-wrestling fan, looks just like another statistic. So they chalked him up with all the others and didn't really consider it news worthy. Is it right or fair? No, but as is life.

To be fair, news articles reflect public interest. When Davey Boy Smith and Owen Hart died, wrestling was fucking huge. The Brooklyn Brawler coulda died, and he'd have been made out like he was a top star in the WWE. With wrestling diminished in terms of following, you will find les.

But to that end, YES, the lack of coverage is still appalling.

Well fair play, Sky Sports News had it on their show yesterday. Wan't much, just showed a few clips of him performing and a statement by Vince, but atleast they mentioned it on a UK news channel.

CNN, MSN, DELL, Yahoo, my local news, AOL, and probably more but I haven't gone out on an all out search, all have the news of his death. Either in the national or entertainment news.

Can you tell me the last Ice Dancer to die? No. What about the most recent World Champion Horseshoe Player? No. You are not interested. It's not appalling, most people might think it's sad that someone died, but to them Eddie Gurerrero might as well be Joey Joe-Joe Junior Jabado who died in a car crash last night. I am just thanking god that it isn't getting MORE coverage for his heart problems linking to his past demons.

Maybe more coverage of the reason he died would be a good thing. Is it not about time we stopped losing wrestlers to frickin' heart problems?
