Hank Williams III: Straight to Hell

Holy SHIT!

I listen to all kinds of music, with tastes as varied as Johnny Cash to Black Flag to Death to Jack Johnson. Anyhow, this CD right here is insane! This is perhaps the first Country Album I have ever seen with a Parental Advisory warning, and I enjoy the Hell out of it. It opens up with a medley entitled "Satan is Real/Straight to Hell". "Satan is Real" is a brief number with a more gospel sound than anything else, then it ends with some Satanic Laughing that leads into "Straight to Hell". The vocals are raw, which goes well with III's take on Traditional Music.

He takes shots at Nashville, and says exactly what he thinks: "I think I'd rather eat the barrel of a double-barrel loaded shotgun, than to listen to that shit they call Pop-Country on 98.1".

I haven't touched the second disc, yet. But hot damn, the first album is bad assed enough for anybody.

If you don't like Country because of the twang, you won't like this. If all you know of III is that he plays bass for Superjoint Ritual, you may not like this. If you hate Country because it sounds like Pop with Fiddles, this is the CD for you.

"KARA-TAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!" Question Mark.

I've got through the second album. It's basically the first ever Noise Country album, where if you've heard some of the Melvins' Noise Rock Albums, its along those lines. In between the answering machine messages, train, streams, and other ambience, there is more songs, including a reworked song from this album, a reworked song from Risin' Outlaw, another new song or two, and three covers, including a track by Hank Sr., Wayne "The Train" Hancock, and Cheech and Chong. There's also a brief part where they tease "Go Fuck You," which is one of his Hellbilly songs. I got it for $15, it was worth every penny.

I've heard the 1st CD - it's fucking awesome. He doesn't pull any punches, basically tells the world to get fucked (Nashville anyway).

Best country album I have heard for as long as I can remember.
