Red Sox might go after Gagne.
He'll be their saviour or a huge bust. Although he's a Canadian, I'm wishing bust on him because he'll be against my Jays. |

Yeah I don't get the JD Drew move at all. Maybe they are just throwing around cash to avoid the backlash from last season but I dunno. JD Drew really doesn't make the Red Sox any better.
I think the Lester thing fucked up a lot of stuff, not his fault obviously the dude got cancer but I really think that threw a wrench into the whole plan and now they are just going out of control. |

What is Boston's payroll like now?
That gap between Boston's payroll and the Yankees must be getting smaller. Especially because I don't think Manny will be traded. I just think its kind of funny because I remember during the time around the whole "Boston Massacre" thing earlier this year, Epstein was saying how they can't compete on the Yankees level money-wise. This should stop Red Sox fans from complaining about Yankee spending though, I know Boston fans on here don't really do that but I know people in real life that do. |

Red Sox are gonna be playing in t-shirts and shorts this year at the rate they're buying players.

Boston was a sweet team in 2004, because they had a lot of players that really fit their team image, and for the most part it wasn't wreckless spending. They signed David Ortiz as a free agent because nobody else wanted him, Pedro had been on the team for a while, Damon really became a superstar on Boston, and then guys like Varitek, Trot, Millar, Mueller, those guys defined Boston. Then Curt Schilling was brought in, which was huge, but it wasn't rediculous. In 2005 though, Boston lost all of its credibility to me. They were never the real underdog, but they started being marketed as one. There are plenty of rebel teams out there that win without having to overspend, and Boston isn't one of them. Then they started getting rid of all of their defining players, Pedro, Damon, Mueller, Lowe, and now they are basically just the Yankees. A lot of over priced guy, many injury prone, who are never going to come together and win it all again.

There's no way Boston's caught up to the Yankees. The Yankees have like 8 guys making at least $13 mil a year. Boston has 2 I think.

Yeah ok that JD Drew deal is REALLY confusing me, what the HELL are they thinking?
And how is Julio Lugo getting that much money? Why is all this insane stuff happening this offseason? Do I know that little about baseball that I'm missing the blindingly obvious? Or has everyone lost the plot?

Gred Maddux to the Padres
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2687700 ------ Good move by the Padres, IMO. They've now got some veteran leadership for their young rotation. |

A lot of the spending this off season has to do with supply. There isn't much, so teams are over paying for guys that aren't worth the money they're getting. What it means is next years players that are really valuable are going to see what lesser guys are making and be asking for much more. It's crazy.
Also, now that they've got a new agreement and labour peace, it causes a bit of sub conscience (maybe not sub conscience) spending. - The Good Times. |

Gabbons thinks the Red Sox payroll will end up around 145 million
He also said he thinks its 90% chance of the Red Sox getting the contract done with Matsuzaka |

Yeah, I don't think Boras has much leverage against the Sox with Matsuzaka. The Red Sox want him and he wants to play here, he doesn't want to go back to Japan. So a deal seems really likely.

Some updates:
Although Jason Schmidt said earlier that a deal had been agreed to, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti refused to confirm that his team had signed the right-hander to a three-year, $47 million contract. According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, free agent Ted Lilly has told the Yankees he'd join them if they're willing to give him a four-year, $40 million contract. Andy Pettitte decided Wednesday he will pitch next year rather than retire. Agent Randy Hendricks confirmed that he's talking with the Yankees about a deal for Andy Pettitte. Scout.com's Bill Shanks says the Braves have acquired Rafael Soriano from the Mariners for Horacio Ramirez. The Pirates have agreed to surrender Mike Gonzalez for Adam LaRoche, but a trade is on hold because the Braves aren't sure Gonzalez is healthy. Free agent Gil Meche has reportedly narrowed his choices to the Blue Jays, Cubs and Royals. Jon Lester confirmed Tuesday that doctors have told him he's cancer-free from lymphoma, and he plans to report to spring training on time. FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal says Greg Maddux will get a one-year, $10 million contract with a $6 million player option for 2008 from the Padres. ESPNews is reporting that the Red Sox and Julio Lugo have agreed to terms on a four-year, $36 million contract. ---- It appears that the Sox might not move Ramirez at this point, which is a good idea. Their payroll is going to go way up. Schmidt could be the best bargain of the offseason, compared to some of the other deals that are being thrown around. It all depends on how healthy he is, I guess. I really hope we get Pettite. We'll get Lilly if Pettite doesn't return, by the sounds of it. Pettite is a better fit because he'd only pitch a year or two probably, is more proven than Lilly, and he's Andy Pettite, pitching for the Yankees again. We have Hughes and Sanchez ready to start in a year or two so we need a short term fix. Great deal for the Braves, Soriano could be their closer if Wickman collapses. I don't know if they need Mike Gonzalaz anymore. My Meche prediction is that he goes to the Cubs. I'd say the Blue Jays, but I think Pettite will sign with the Yankees and Lilly will resign with the Jays. Good to hear Lester is doing better, I wish him the best. Yup, as I predicted, the Red Sox are overpaying for Lugo. That's how the market is going though. Great deal getting Maddux. I'll be targeting him next year in the later rounds in my Fantasy draft now that he'll be pitching half of his games in Petco. |

The Cubs and Ted Lilly have reached a preliminary agreement on a four-year, $40 million contract, FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal is reporting.
Well, this afternoon's reports weren't entirely accurate if this is the case, as Lilly supposedly preferred a four-year, $40 million contract from the Yankees to four years and $44 million from the Cubs. However, it seems likely that part of those reports were true, and the Yankees simply decided it wasn't worth it, especially with Andy Pettitte potentially on the horizon. Cubs are the team on the move this off season. I guess the Jays will pursue Meche now, I'd like to see JP get pissed off about Lilly and take a run at Zito. God, I'd jerk off for a week.

Cubs pick ups kinda seem like Redskin NFL style pick ups though, I don't know if it is gonna pan out to anything on the field.
Atleast they didn't sign JD Drew for 70 mil......

The Cubs have gotten screwed on injuries more than anything else lately. Derek Lee was amazing, but then last year got injured. Wood and Prior, same thing. If Prior is healthy next year, along with Zambrano and Lilly with Wood closing, they will have a good pitching staff. I don't think they have a complete enough team to maek the playoffs, but I expect them to win a lot more games this year.

"MLB.com is reporting that the Dodgers and Luis Gonzalez have agreed to terms on a one-year, $7 million contract."
Solid bat and good clubhouse guy for the Dodgers. "Eric Gagne rejected an offer from the Dodgers that would have guaranteed him about $4 million with a chance to make about $6 million more in incentives. Not only does Gagne probably feel he can do better elsewhere, but he reportedly wants to go to a team that would guarantee him the chance to close. Boston would seem to be his best bet, especially if he wants to get to the postseason. If he's willing to accept a setup role, Toronto would be an intriguing alternative." Now Gagne would be a good gamble for the Red Sox. "Ted Lilly reportedly left $5 million on the table by choosing the Cubs' four-year offer over that of the Blue Jays. Lilly took $40 million from the Cubs. The Jays are now focusing on signing Gil Meche, but Meche also has a substantial offer from the Cubs on the table." I predicted Meche would land with the Jays, but I figured that would only happen because Lilly would sign with the Yankees. Meche is the real winner here, the Jays and Cubs are gonna have a hell of a bidding war here. It could go either way, IMO. "Daisuke Matsuzaka will return to the United States this weekend with the goal of ironing out a deal with the Red Sox." "According to Newsday, there have been indications that free agent Ron Villone is leaning toward accepting the Yankees' offer of arbitration." I hope so, Villone is solid and should be pretty cheap. "The Twins have spoken with the agents for free-agent right-hander Sidney Ponson. Ponson could be offered a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. The Twins also have some interest in Bruce Chen and Paul Wilson as they seek to add more rotation depth." Man, sucks to be without Liriano. |

Glad to hear we could be keeping hold of Villone.
Gotta figure Gagne will flourish in Boston if he transitions ok, he'll probably be used in about 30 games less a year for a start |

Too bad Gagne doesn't want to set up. Gagne-Rivera would be pretty ridiculous. I still think the Red Sox are getting him, I figured they would have made some changes to their bullpen already after how bad it was last year.
