One Match

Let's say for an intent and purposes, you had a friend (yes, a real life friend, not the blow-up doll under your bed) and this friend actually said, "Hey man, I was thinking of getting into wrestling. It sounds pretty cool the way you talk about it (because I guess you have been building it up for quite a while as this amazing art)."

So then you want to sit him down and show him just one match from any point in professional wrestling. This is the match that will ease him into this crazy world of wrestling. It is a match that will attract him to wrestling and make him want to watch more. Maybe getting hooked and turning into an IWC member just like you.

So what is this match that you show to your friend?

I have been debating this in my mind for a while. My first instinct would be to show him The Undertaker vs. Mick Foley in a Hell in a Cell at the King of the Ring in 1998. However, I feel that would definitely be a misleading thing to do. He would then I'm sure, assume all wrestling matches are just like that. Thus, creating a wirl wind of hope to only have it crushed when he watches any Batista match.

So then I started thinking and realized there is no better match to show him than Bret "The Hitman" Hart vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13. He'll get to see blood (which I'm sure attracts a lot of people), he'll get to see hard-hitting, fast paced action and he'll get to see a damn fine pro wrestler (Bret) facing a damn fine charismatic wrestler (Austin). And hopefully, the match will get him into wrestling along with the roaring Chicago crowd. Just maybe he'll think that was a great and cool match and well dammit I want to watch more wrestling.

Then of course, I'd have to forlorn him that wrestling isn't always going to be that great.

So what is your one match?

Eugene vs. Snitsky from HeAT.

Fairly decent model of the product they would be getting into if they became a fan today. No use in showing them classic stuff which will only build it up to have it dashed down as soon as they watch their first RAW or SmackDown.

Angle vs Taker vs Rock for the title at Vengance that one year.

1st off. Being a non-fan of wrestling to begin with, gives them someone they may know already, The Rock.

2nd. Great match with great wrestling.

3rd. Beginning w/ Angle being ignored is hillarious and would get the person a good chuckle off the bat, thus hopefully making them realize it is entertainment and that this is fun.

Paul London vs. Billy Kidman at No Mercy 2004 would be a candidate. I am serious.

First of all, this isn't the smark in me talking, seeing guys like London hit a quebrada from inside the ring to the outside, is simply amazing. Fake or not, that is the kind of shit that instills adrenaline in you. Moves like the London Calling don't hurt either.

There is also drama in the match. Paul London and Billy Kidman were partners and friends before Kidman started second guessing his Shooting Star Press, and he left London out to dry. London then wants a piece of Kidman. It is a perfectly human match, with one guy wanting to beat the shit out of the other and wake him up.

The match also had great psychology, with Kidman working over the gut of London. It has all the smart wrestling a purist can want.

Something good from the past year considering that'd be pretty much the product they'd be watching now. I'd go with the Rumble. It exposes them to a neat concept and something they might look forward to seeing (WrestleMania).

Yeah, the London-Kidman match from No Mercy '04 is very underated. Nice fucking choice.

I got my wife to start watching wrestling during the HHH/Steiner feud. I'd say theoretically you can get somebody to start watching wrestling with any match....as long as your good in the sack.
