If it wasn't WCW and ECW vs. WWE? The two needing to join forces made them look weak.

I think they went wrong when they turned Booker T and Shane McMahon heel. People were into Shane as a face, and Booker T as his WCW Champion was something that people actually seemed eager to see. When Booker attacked Stone Cold Steve Austin and put him through the announce table in his WWE debut, the fans went pretty fucking crazy. Austin was a great heel at the time, and he just needed a top face to go against him. Booker T could have been that top face, and a feud over who the "Real World Champion" was could have been what the WWE needed to kick-start the Invasion with some credibility.

If WWE would have waited until they could afford the bigger names to come in or just would have bought their turner contracts to begin with.

WWE had a lot of injuries during this time that also hurt the angle. I think the storyline would have been more interesting if Benoit and Triple H weren't out the whole time.

Have to agree with Steele here (NOT LIVING THE GIMMICK!)

Imagine the Invasion angle with...

Hogan, Nash, Hall, Flair, Goldberg, Steiner, Booker (lead by Bischoff)

vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvV

Austin, Rock, Jericho, HHH, Taker, Kane, Benoit, Angle (lead by Vince)

Also, didn't help that post Invasion PPV they jobbed The Aliance out left, right and centre.

Remember when Austin was supposed to be the savior and then he switched sides. They had that whole set up and at the end he's at the bar drinking and playing pool then he smashes the stick to pieces. That was a great moment in sports entertainment history.

Agreed on the Alliance jobbing point. If they had let the Alliance win a lot more then they would have been considered a threat more. Also all they did throughout the feud was to put WWE guys into the Alliance (Test, Christian, Regal etc). By the time the final match came at Survivor Series 01, the only guys from WCW or ECW in the team were Booker T and RVD.

Remember when they had 'WCW' on RAW?

The would change the ring apron and insert the new WCW logo at the bottom on the screen. Buff Bagwell vs. Booker T was their very first match

Not making The Alliance look like a bunch of douches almost immediately would have helped.

They could have drawn this out for years. In fact, as they had been talking about, they should have done the brand split with WCW/ECW taking one side and WWE taking the other show. Then, like now, ECW could have come into the mix by breaking away from WCW.

It would have essentially been the same as now by now except with the WCW name I suppose.

Pretty much every big name from WCW has come through the WWF/E since the invasion angle. Goldberg, Steiner, nWo, Flair, the only one missing is Sting essentially. If they HAD drawn it out a bit longer, Ric Flair and the nWo would have been right in there. Flair came in the night after the Alliance was killed, and Hogan Hall and Nash 3 months later.

Could have even had a DX/nWo feud. Triple H, X-Pac and Billy Gunn vs Hogan Hall and Nash?

Steiner was in 9 months later. Quite a long time in terms of a wrestling calender, but in the meantime they could have built up new stars. Jericho could have been credible, Benoit, Eddie, Mysterio would have been there by then so he could have been built up, not to mention the tag division with Dudleyz, Hardyz, Palumbo/O'Haire, APA, Kidman/Mysterio (I'm sure they were a team in the old WCW) DX and the nWo.

Also, NOT making Stephanie the ECW owner would have been better. Shane running WCW was great, but Stephanie in ECW? Although it would have been interesting to see where Triple H went after is quad tear. Stay with Vince and the WWF or join his wife in ECW?

If they just stretched it out and made The Alliance look credible it would have been great.

Another point. By May WWF became WWE. What if at the Survivor Series the Alliance won, and WWF went out of business? Then a few months later, Vice came back and started recruiting for his NEW company, World Wrestling Entertainment.

The possibilities are endless. Also, how many versions of this thread have there been now?

Primarily, this.

It didn't feel like an invasion and a threat, it felt like a bunch of castoffs from WCW with a few stars from elsewhere (Primarily ECW).

See jamesSteele.

Make the wwf roster the underdogs for the first six months, and actually make it seem like ecw and wcw were separate promotions with their own separate title scenes rather than having titles from wcw on wwf wrestlers, and vice versa. let the wwf fans get to know the wcw/ecw guys as stars in their own rights before throwing them into the mix with vinces boys.

In 02 and 03 they had the weapons to have made the Invasion perfect roster wise, but WWE got impatient and booked some awful things during that time in 01. At the end of the Invasion at S Series 01 in the ME and the title unification matches, Booker T was the only WCW guy in any of those matches and he was put out early.

My 5 favortie Invasion Moments

1. The crazy RAW in July (WCW turns heel, ECW group forms then aligns with WCW, Steph new ECW owner even though that ended up as an awful idea)
2. Shane revealed he has bought WCW
3. The Rocks decision between the WWF and the Alliance
4. Heymans promo on Vince the Smackdown before Survivor Series
5. The RAW where what WWF guy (Angle) would join the Alliance

Hey, I've got an idea. We'll start an enormous feud which everyone who has ever watched wrestling wants to see, by having Lance Storm run into the ring, superkick Perry Saturn, and then run out into the crowd. It'll be huge.

Leave out Stephanie and Shane McMahon and have Heyman (who was under contract anyways) take control of the WCW/ECW alliance against Vince McMahon. The promos alone would've been gold.

In short, NOT having Vince vs. Shane/Steph as the focal point of the Invasion would have made things so much better.

Well it didn't help with the constant defections, they hotshotted everything. That angle nearly made me stop watching completely.

Steele made valid points, but the main problem was the 'You're fired, wait three months off screen and you'll be back' (Thats a v generous estimate as well, normally three weeks)

As it was it just ended up being another McMahon civil war, it just happened to ruin the greatest angle they could ever have hoped for.

Oh... PLEASE.

Yeah, imagine it. Imagine the dream matches, the massive PPV cards, the crowds gone wild, the packed arenas...

...and then imagine the egos, the poltics, the quintuple main events, the IWC screaming about how O'Haire, Palumbo, Storm, Jindrak, Van Dam, Dreamer, Awesome, and many more, were released from the company- and make no doubt, no company that employs Austin, Rock, Hogan, Taker, Goldberg, Steiner, Flair, the entire Kliq, and possibly Sting is going to pay for a bunch of guys they're not EVER going to use. With that card you'd have been lucky to get any kind of tag team scene in there.

Additionally, anyone who thinks that WCW wouldn't have ultimately been booked as the heel squad in the end is an idiot.

Yeah, "what if" situations are fun, but let's not pretend this stuff could have worked. Someone's ego would have taken hold, and a main event would have been completely ruined by a Hogan stroke-pull, or Goldberg kicking someone in the head, etc, etc. I ask Jericho fans: would he ever have been the first ever Undisputed Champion if the likes of Hulk Hogan, Goldberg, Flair, and Kevin Nash had all been on the active roster? (The answer is no, btw, you're welcome.)

The biggest problem with the Invasion was that the WWE never ever looked like losing. Even when Austin defected.

Say what you want about it, it still brought some moments that will live forever, and tbh, it's a million light years ahead of the shit we have now. I'll never forget seeing Mike Awesome win the hardcore title in the first 10 minutes of Raw at MSG that year. I was simply....

WHAT....THE....FUCK!?

Best moment though? Freddie Blassie speaking to the Raw guys and the camera keeps flicking to Austin in the bar who eventually loses his mind. If anyone has THAT moment, link me, and I'll love you forever.

Anything would have made it better. If it wasn't focused on the McMahons. If WCW and ECW were given credible wins. If instead of just taking Austin to WCW side, which made no since as Austin hated WCW. If they brought in guys like Nash and Goldberg and Scott Steiner to head WCW. If ECW looked like a rouge group that would use hit and run tactics instead of joining with WCW (because ECW hated WCW more than WWF(E)). If Buff Bagwell never existed. And tons of other things.

The Alliance was booked incredibly poorly. They looked weak as hell, first by merging WCW and ECW, then by adding WWE wrestlers to the alliance. What, WCW and ECW's wrestlers together aren't good enough? They didn't have a lot of the "big names" (which they could have waited for and postponed the angle, but I guess it was around X-7), but they could have easily built up names like Booker T, DDP, Rob Van Dam, Mike Awesome and Tommy Dreamer as more legitimate threats.

The most notable would be Steve Austin's induction, where he basically made the entire Alliance his bitch.

The McMahons also had to get involved. Shane McMahon buying WCW was pretty shocking and all, but imagine the invasion led by Paul Heyman or Eric Bischoff instead of Shane or Stephanie McMahon.

It's like WWE assumed that WCW and ECW together didn't have enough name recognition to be taken seriously, so they put their own wrestlers and personalities into the angle which made them seem like a weak threat at best and got rid of the prospect of cross-promotional dream matches.
