Writers Strike
For christ's sake, I'm all for equality I am (thats why I think female staff should work longer, so they can earn the same as the men) but all these shows are being closed down and production suspended, does the situation really require such action? I know it does, its just I want my shows back.

Was quite funny to see Carlton Cuse holding up a sign on the picket line; 'Want to know what the Island is?'

There are stories of coincidence and chance and intersections and strange things told and which is which and who only knows....and we generally say, "Well if that was in movie I wouldn't believe it." Someone's so and so meet someone else's so and so and so on -- It is in the humble opinion of this narrator that these strange things happen all the time.......and so it goes and so it goes and the book says, "We may be through with the past, but the past ain’t through with us."

I love the point they're proving. Without writers, you have no shows. It's so fucking simple, and yet so many people 'above the line' don't seem to understand this concept.

Well, money trumps reason. They like the money they're making, and one of the focal points is writers getting compensated for their work changing medium. Therefore, the concept of losing money filibusters the concept that they need writers to make shows worl.

I agree with why they're striking, but it's getting to the point where I don't even give a fuck about them. I'm sick of hearing about them. They don't have nearly as much power as they think they wield.
It could end up like the air traffic controller strike where they just get replaced and find themselves all out of jobs. Then the ones who are even able to still get a job can put down their signs, tuck their tails between their legs and come crawling back

So do you know if the writers are still writing stuff on the side, but not giving it to the studios

Say with the Lost example, the whole show could now have a killer script because they’ve had loads of extra time to write it, but they are just not giving it to the studio

Or are they flat out not writing anything?

I see the Golden Globes is basically just going to be a press conference now

I think the Oscars could be the deal breaker, it’s the biggest night of the year for movies, and if they boycott that, there’s a ton of money to be lost. So I predict a resolution before the academy awards.

Personally I don’t blame them, and I don’t see what the big deal is from our point of view, there’s so much content out there that I’ve never had a chance to check out because my free time is taken with these shows, I can watch other old stuff now and get hooked on loads of seasons of stuff I’ve never seen (like 24)

Also, studios can, and are, still making movies that have already been written.. I mean, you realize the stockpile of screenplays just sitting in cardboard boxes in Hollywood??

I still get an IATSE newsletter from 478 and there are already over 50 features in preproduction in Louisiana for 2008.. Movies won't stop being made for a long, long time..

You're right. But I think it has more to do with the fact that anyone who could fill the jobs is probably reluctant to it, even if they're not a part of the writers guild, because if and when it's resolved they'd then be a scab in retrospect.
And being a scab isn't what you want to be. Unions and strikers rule though fear really.

NBC said they made over a Billion Dollars last year on the web. Now them making that statement when the writers are on strike for precisely these reasons (not getting paid for material that goes to the web) is rather foolish and arrogant. In the long run, I also believe it hurts their case.

There's really no telling if NBC's bullshitting or not, though. Alot of these news networks are coming off as extremely biased against the writers, and for obvious reasons.

So what shows are back despite the strike? I know The Tonight Show and Late Night, and I've noticed that the Daily Show (A Daily Show, I guesS) is back. Bill Maher's been on for a couple weeks...

I mean, I know some other shows are on right now simply because they were filmed and produced before the strike, but these are shows that go on regularly and such.

Also, how funny is it that a lot of REALITY shows are being affected by the strike?
