Mr. Kennedy Out Again

By Ryan Clark on August 27, 2008 at 12:32 PM EST

I learned this morning from a source within WWE that Mr. Kennedy is scheduled for shoulder surgery this Friday. He is expected to miss four to six months after the procedure, which will be performed by Dr. Andrews.

Kennedy injured his shoulder during a house show match with Shelton Benjamin earlier this month, and has been working lightly ever since. Kennedy was diagnosed with a torn labrum and damage to his rotator cuff. After two weeks of rehab and no progress, it was determined he would require surgery.

I'm gonna call it right now, that this guys career (in WWE) is basically over. Seriously, WWE is not going to invest money in someone that spends twice as much time on the shelf as they do in the ring. He's at the very least never going to be given a major role in the company because at this point he is far too unreliable.

Yeah I'd have to agree. He'd need a long period of stable performing before they'll risk him main eventing, and even then he'd probably get busted on the Wellness Policy.

Talk about the mighty falling, the guy had a huge career in the palm of his hand and threw it all away.

As a face he's terrible. As a heel, I love him. Kinda like Jericho.

You raise a good point, but Ray Mastrio is still employed (and in the main event at a PPV) and he never wrestles. Plus he sucks. Kennedy has talent.

This really sucks though. I love watching Kennedy. Sure he's much better as a heel, but he's still awesome on the stick and good in the ring. It sucks he got busted, he had a lot of potential.

^ I don't think Rey has much time left in the spotlight either for that matter. He's been around the business a long time and I think he gets the benefit of the doubt for being a veteran. I don't think WWE will axe him for it, but his time as a main event performer is up if he goes down again.

Such a tragic fall from grace. Three years ago we were all on the Kennedy bandwagon, and I even remember some people claiming him to be the "next Rock". I haven't cared anything about Kennedy for over a year now.

I really, really doubt this will be the end of Mr. Kennedy. The guy is over as fuck, and someone the WWE has really done a good job of building up as a potential main eventer. The time away will do him some good, and when he returns, he will be even more hot than he was before, and get a pretty nice push.

If the WWE can't release Carlito in fear he will become something for TNA, I doubt they are going to release Mr. Kennedy.

If he can never put together 6-12 months of consecutive in ring work, how the hell is he going to stay over, marketable, and a draw? Everytime he comes back from an injury he comes back hot and with a nice push...and then he gets injured again or fails or a drug test. How many times does this happen before they draw the line?

I don't know that he'll be released or anything, but he will never be a top level guy until he can prove he can stay healthy and stay clean. Also as far as Carlito goes, while being a colossal disappointment, he hasn't been plagued with injuries and wellness violations. At least he can be used on TV to fill up a time slot. And they don't want him going to TNA on the off chance he decides to get his act together and TNA decides to book him right. Kennedy, they probably wouldn't be as concerned with because even if used correctly he's only good for a few months before he's on the shelf again.

JBL is riddled with injuries, John Cena has been getting hurt a lot lately, it's not unusual for Batista to hurt himself, or The Undertaker. Hell, Randy Orton injured his collarbone, healed it, then went and did it again.

If the fans cheer/boo Mr. Kennedy, as they have been doing, then he's usable. Maybe one day the fans will stop caring, but that hasn't happened yet, and I guarantee they will care when Kennedy returns. Let's just see what happens.

JBL is an older wrestler coming to the end of his career working an already soft schedule, not an up and coming prospect that could be the future of the sport. They don't have to invest alot in JBL long term. Batista hasn't missed much time in a while. John Cena is just now starting to have injury problems, Kennedy's have been ongoing for quite some time now. Also, Cena is in his prime and is one of if not the biggest draw in the sport. The Undertaker sorta fits in with JBL but is on an even bigger scale. He is a legend of the business and can probably get away with doing whatever he wants.

Now we come to Orton, and Orton is probably in a similar boat as Kennedy. They see Orton as a bigger star so he has a little more room for error, BUT he has screwed up alot between injuries, wellness violations, behavioral problems, etc. Orton is another guy that unless he cleans up his act and stays healthy could either be on the chopping block or locked into mid-card hell for the rest of his career.

That really sucks for Kennedy, but I hope they use this time to bring him back as a HEEL. The only problem being that MVP has eclipsed Ken in the midcard heel spot and has remained drug and injury free for 2 years.

1) Obviously Triple H and Mr. Kennedy are not on a level playing field.

2) I stated several times that while it doesn't necessarily mean he will be fired, he will not likely have another big push or shot in the main event until he stays healthy for an extended period of time.

Edge kept getting injured a lot when they were first trying to push him, of course Edge was pretty reliable in his tag career, so he had that as a back up.

Just for the record, I was never on the Kennedy band wagon.

Those are all logical points, but has any career really been dampened by injuries in the past? OK, yes, but not in the sense that a guy is injured, returns to work (which Kennedy will be able to do, and well), only for the WWE to say "Look, you may get injured again, we're going to throw everything we've put into you away?"

When Kennedy returns off his injury, the fans will remember him as a face, and as a rising star in the WWE. They will cheer, and Kennedy will return hotter than he has arguably been in his entire career. I can't see them jobbing him out to Vladimir Kozlov, or anything. If Kennedy continues to get injured, then maybe the WWE will consider giving him the perennial "Chris Jericho" treatment, and hold off on doing anything major with him (ironically, Jericho has never been injured in his WWE career).

Shit happens in this business. Kennedy has been hurt, what, like three times? If you put Kennedy in a category of "this generation's stars," then he's really do no worse than John Cena, Batista and Randy Orton. This injury is something the WWE has known about for a while now, and it was sort of expected that Kennedy would need surgery. It's nothing really new.

I can't see this having major ramifications on Kennedy's career.

I don't think Orton is exactly safe either. Again, I don't think that necessarily means he's gonna get axed but he's not gonna be the focus of any major storylines or involved in the main event scene.

I don't see anyone in wrestling right now as "the next Rock" but honestly, I couldn't argue Kennedy being the closest thing...

The "Next Rock" or "Next Austin" tends to be overused. Ken Kennedy could be something if they would push him for more than 30 seconds at a time, but then again, a lot of momentum loss is due to drug usage or injury, so it's not completely WWE's fault. Although with his Money in the Bank deal, they royally fucked up.

I agree its not all WWE's fault but their 'damage control' is appalling. Take the Hornswoggle stroyline, everyone knew it was going to be Kennedy, so instead of them holding off till he got back from suspension or subbing in someone else that needed a push, they put one of the biggest storylines of the year onto a midget. Now don't get me wrong I like little Horny, he's been entertaining at least but was never worthy of that spot.

You can't apply logic to WWE though. Its almost as if Vince wakes up in the morning and thinks "hmm its wednesday, lets push Kennedy" and then by lunchtime they have 4 segments involving Cena and they have nothing for Kennedy (you could replace Kennedy here with most of the under / mid card).
