Vista Codec's
Ok, please refrain from rinsing Vista becuase I have it, I like it, and nothing you will say on the matter will make any difference to anyone or anything. ever.

So, I got a movie in avi format. ripped with 'lossless' i think. It plays but with no sound. (On WMP) I am assured that if I go on the hunt for codecs I will be alright in the end. However the all singing all dancing one I had for XP on my old computer doesn't work with Vista.

So does anybody know of a good one? Or a decent media player which will play virtually any format?

www.shark007.net and grab Vista Codec Pack from there. Nothing I've thrown at it has failed to play in any media player.

I use the CCCP without the media players, google it and pretty much everything will play in Windows Media Player 11. I use VLC for anything too tricky.

Quick question for the likes of DS and BC.

I've got an old Pentium III with Windows '98 that I don't use anymore.

Thinking of hooking it up to my Home Theatre system and Plasma so I can D-link from my regular dual-core PC (with XP) in my study.

So, can I use MP9 on my old PC (can't run later versions I understand on '98) under this arrangement or can I use the latest version of VLC. I tested a couple of avi files (new TV shows) using MP9 on the weekend - some were good (particularly DivX formats) while others were jittery and the audio was out of sync (but weren't on my other PC).

Feel free to offer other suggestions - don't want to have to spend a lot of money on upgrading RAM etc.

Depending on the specs you could probably set it up with something like MythTV (under linux). It's not too demanding, especially if you use you use your desktop as the backend. It supports virtually everything and you can get remotes and what-not for it.

Though no matter what, you'll likely be hard-pressed to push out HD content on something that old without upgrades (and maybe not at all).

Personally, to stream video to my TV I use a modded XBox with XBMC.

You could do that, or you could run a terminal server like VNC on your Dual core PC and just remote in from the P3. That way, all that's getting sent down the pipe is screen refreshes and all the grunt is being done on the dual core.
I've never tried it, so I don't know how well it will work, but it's where I'd start.

Thanks guys.

I've just about got it all set-up ready to test.

I'll load VLC on the old PC and try that as well. If I have problems I'll try Myth TV as Xero suggested or VNC as BC suggests. Need to do some research on both of those as I know zilch about them.

VLC STILL wouldn't play the audio on this film...

K-Lite, however did. In WMP as well!
