Damon Albarn in Running to Direct London Olympic Ceremony

We've seen some pretty spectacular Olympic opening ceremonies recently: Bjork in Athens in 2004, all those drummers in Beijing in 2008. And when the Games come to London in 2012, a mob of cartoon apes could conceivably join their ranks.

The Independent reports that Blur frontman and Gorillaz co-mastermind Damon Albarn is "a leading contender" to become the artistic director of the 2012 Olympics, which is nuts. (Via the Quietus) Reportedly, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games has begun preliminary discussions with Albarn.

Albarn has some experience with this sort of thing. Along with fellow Gorillaz guy Jamie Hewlett, Albarn did the music and animation for the BBC's coverage of the Beijing Olympics last summer. But can you imagine what Damon Albarn could do if he had access to vast quantities of fireworks and the entire world's attention?

Oh yeah? I had a dream too once, but mine was fulfilled in a much shorter span of time. My dream was to interact with such intellects as Indifferent Clox and I'm living that right now.
