Will video game companies ever retro?

Example, do you think Nintendo would ever re-release the NES and a greatest hits library? Or it is now pointless since of the online shops and they could just put up the game for sale to download? Playstation does not have to do it for obvious reasons, but we could get the Sega Master System all over again.

I would love the idea, and would re-purchase gaming systems physically.

No, because that would be a ridiculous waste of money to produce. If they want to shill NES games they will just put them on the Wii shop, elsewhere they will just do HD remakes where backwards compatibiliy is unavailable. Nobody will pay full price for an old game, it's just not cost effective. If you really wanted to buy a NES and a bunch of cartridges theres nothing stopping you right now anyway.

part of me wants to see it happen, too. not necessarily greatest hits, but a brand new game released for the nes or genesis. we are retro nerds, and make up a very small percentage of people that pay for games today. everything mantis says is true. i can find original cartridges of great old-school games still kicking around in local pawn shops and online auctions. because of that, even i wouldn't buy a re-release at full price.

i think if an nes or sega master system (with independent cartridge games) were to be released in 2011, it would generate some buzz, and may even create some fans of a "lo-fi" game movement. but it would have to be a fucking ton of buzz to be worth the extra money. there's no way people would care enough.

oh well. maybe some crazy independent developer will do it. the copyrights on old school cartridges must be up by now.

Why re-release them when ebay has them all or you can buy the plug and play systems, at least for the megadrive, which support the old cartridges?

At most I could see them releasing retro controllers for new system. A wireless NES controller for Wii or something along that line. Anything else is not really cost efficient, even though we may enjoy it.

i guess fye in one of the malls by me closed, and some retro store opened in its space. they had this system that played nes, snes and genesis cartridges. looked pretty cool. felt insanely weird being in there because the employees fit the stereotype of video game nerds who play d&d in their mom's basement with cheetos and mountain dew. i give that store 3 months before it's gone.

What's the point? Digital marketplaces pretty much do just this, without the hassle of hooking up another console. We've even gone into an age of HD Remixes and retro-sequels, on top of straight ports.

Based on what you seem to enjoy, you should be fortunate. It's a good time for retro gamers.

there is a very successful store like that around here. www.estarland.com is the website, i have posted about it a lot. they also have that fuckin system that plays all nes, snes, and genesis and i hate it, they have it on display on this little tv and have chrono trigger hooked up. i started a file in it like a year ago and progress it every time i go there " lol

As everyone said, it would be a huge step backward. There is a market for doing that, but it is extremely small, and nowhere near worth the effort.

Easier and cheaper to host the retro games on a download/"virtual console" setup or plug-in-play than having to recreate the retro system to exactly how it was back then.

I know it is sort of impossible for Nintendo to re-create the NES to 1980s standard because they used up all their spare parts for the NES after supporting a repair program for the system that lasted almost 20 years.

SEGA has already sort of done that. You can go into HMV over here and buy this mini SEGA Megadrive with 18 or so games on it for about £40. They even have a hand held version.

Its less than £40 now, and it plays carts from anywhere in the world according to the blurb, saved me plugging in my megadrive.

I would buy retro controllers if they ever released them.

I was in my local HMV last week and it was £40. If it's dropped since then, cool.

I didn't know it played carts at all. I thought they were all built in so no need for a slot. If it does play carts from anywhere, I might actually buy one. I missed out on a lot of SEGA games, growing up a NES/SNES child.

Yeah, it's £22 used from Amazon.

Probably going to get one. Is the pad a decent since or is small and dinky?
