OK, seriously - WTF is it with sports people and the WCW Belt?

OK, nearly everytime I see an NBA clip some schmo is wearing or carrying a WCW Big Gold with them. Then, at the close of the NFL's Eagles / Falcons deal, some guy from the Eagles is carrying around a WCW Big Gold.

I've also seen this on NHL games before, and once I saw someone in on ESPN (not sure if it was a fan or a player - but they were in a jersey) at an MLB game with one.

How can carrying around a $100 replica belt be so cool to someone?

I dunno. Pastor Troy had both the old WWF belt and the WCW belt in his 2002 music video "Are We Cuttin?".

Well Freddy Mitchell is the self proclaimed people's champ so it does fit. It was a great moment that brought a tear to my eyes.

I figure it's the same reason I want the replica, it's big, it looks cool, and it kicks ass. (Of course I also know most of the history, and that helps.) It wouldn't have as much of a 'wow' factor if they were carrying around the old WWF Eagle belt to a non-wrestling fan, would it?

When Rasheed Wallace (I think?) bought WCW belts for all of the Pistons, it was a cool gesture, because it signified that they were the champions until someone beat them.

Of course, now, the Pistons have gotten the Benoit treatment...

I guess they want people to look at them and wonder "Why in the hell do they have a WcW/WWE belt?"
