NBA Slam Dunk Competition Question

Was looking through the history of the SDC and noticed that there was no SDC in 1998 and 1999. How come there was no SDC competition for these 2 years?

The NBA got rid of it for a couple of years. Said it wasn't popular anymore.

The ratings which skyrocket for the dunkcontest and dive completely for all the other comps showed this not to be true.

They brought it back in 2000 and Vince Carter went nuts, making it impossible for them to justify getting rid of it again.
