Club or Country?

I was going to stick this in the football thread but it applys to all sports with a decent level of international competition so it basically involves most big sports exlcuding the American ones really.

Anyway using football as a example would you rather see your team win the Chamipons Leauge or your country win the world/european championships?

For me it'd be country all the way, hell I'd trade Villa being relegated for Ireland winning the world cup. But I'm sure some of you think differently so go at it.

Club, fuck England. I have no care for them, I'd sooner Chelsea won the League/Champions League then England won a major tournament.

I go to every Chelsea home game, I watch England games on telly just to see how Chelsea players play really, I chere England on, but I don't really care if they lose.

Thought you'd say that Dazz, tbh I might feel differently if I went to all Villa games but as it is I get over once a year only really. Whereas well before the current qualifying campaign I hadn't a missed a single compettitive home game for Ireland for 10 years

Even if i didnt go to Chelsea or England game, I still reckon I'd prefer Chelsea, I just dont care enough about England, they rarely play so it's boring.

Just a question LC, would you classify your country in football as the Czech Republic or the USA?

Club. I would rather Leicester won the FA Cup even than England winning another major tournament. Even though Leicester City have never won the premiership (or the old equivalent) or the FA Cup, i'd also rather see the Tigers (Leicester's rugby team) win things, and they dominated the 90s.

This season has been the first that i've gone down to Filbert Way on my own, so i'll be going there more often and at the end of the day i wouldn't go and watch England other than if they played at Leicester again, i'd be tempted to go to a major tournament but it would cost a lot.

If Leicester lose it puts a downer on my weekend, if England lose it puts one on maybe the following hour after the match.

USA cause I was born here.

But since Czech and USA never really play each other and USA clubs don't play European clubs and USA clubs suck, I go for the Czechs everywhere else outside of the US.

I have a freind who was born in the US. Parents are from Portugal and he has family down there and he goes for Portugal instead of US. We beat there ass in 2002

He likes Porto too.

Although I am only quarter Iranian, yet half English, I'd still cheer on Iran, because England will no doubt put out a team that will annoy me, such as having the nevilles, beckham, some shit on the left wing and a dodgey attack, Iran all the way, it would rule if they knocked England out the world cup, they'd get mad respect.

Depends on the sport really and how much I follow the club team. In baseball, basketball, and hockey I'd rather have the club win but in soccer and rugby I'd rather have the country win. So that's 3-2 club so my vote is for club

I voted for country but I really love the way the European club system is set up. It amazes me how many different leagues and different teams they are able to maintain, but being in the US its hard to follow the clubs very closely. There is just something about international competition too, its like the biggest and the best, and you just can't beat that, but the club system is set up magnificently.

Not thinking, I saw this title and thought it meant music...in case it did, club for sure.

Aside from Celtic and Rangers fans, I really only ever hear English people pick clubs. I can't grasp why at all. Each to their own and all but I'll never be convinced.

I dunno, being Canadian my feelings are probably a bit irrelevent. In hockey, my favourite team is the Penguins, so naturally I pull for them to win. I don't honestly care much for the Canadian NHL teams winning, but I like seeing Canadian players do well. In the World Championships and all that, of course I go for Canada.

I would like to think a far more amount of pride should be taken in knowing you were the best in the world, rather than a league for your sport at the given time.

Well when you twist your words, of course that sounds better. If I were to say "I would like to think a far more amount of pride should be taken in knowing you were the best team in the most competitive environment that sport has to offer, rather than beating a bunch of second- and third-rate teams worldwide at the given time.", it would be the same thing, only reversed.

I don't even support a club, even though I follow the club game with a mad passion. I've always kind of loved Barcelona, but I wouldn't be stupid enough to call myself a big fan, since they're all the way over in Catalunya.

So watching international games with Ireland involved is a different prospect for me since I love them so much and I get so worried before big games I spend the whole time hunched over and squirming in pain.

So obviously it's internationals for me. Still love club football, though.

Got tickets to see Ireland vs. England in the Six Nations next Saturday too. I couldn't give a shit about club rugby, but I love the Rugby Union internationals.

I used to have the rugby game for PS2 and it had the Six Nations thing in it. I let some kid borrow it and he moved.

Club. I just don't feel the same connection to England as I do to Portsmouth. Don't get me wrong, I support England but theres something about when big tournaments that seems really phoney. Like ill see people who don't give a toss or know anything about football talking about it. Which is partly good i suppose because it brings everyone together but still.

Also since I go to Portsmouth games I feel more of a connection with the players and fans because im from the area.

I love my club side and feel absolutly gutted and sick when they lose, when England lose, its a bugger but ill get over it.
