The Amityville Horror (spoilers)

Just got back from seeing it with a couple of girls. Wasn't too impressed at all. It seems that every god damn horror movie since The Ring has been the same thing with pop up scares with little to no build up or suspense. Sure, some of the stuff was pretty gnarly and gruesome, but to me, a scary movie is one that leaves something with you after you walk out of the theater - this movie fails to do that. In other words, nothing memorable. We've all seen these scares before - flashy jump outs, bloody sinks, people appearing out of nowhere, people appearing in the mirror, faces transforming to ghastly images. Same old, same old. But I guess I shouldn'tve expected much else from Michael Bay, although I did like Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Besides, I couldn't buy Van Wilder as the father figure turned mad.

The movie had it's share of scares. Most of them you didn't see coming and that's probably why I enjoyed the movie. Although it makes 0 sense, still, I walked in knowing that. It was enjoyable for a theater movie, even if the ending left me like "...wait where's the ending?"

Also Ryan Reynolds is the man so that's a giver.

All in all, a good scary movie on it's first hour.

To say the original sucks, well sorry, wrong. Sure if you go out and rent it today, it's lame. Yet when I saw it in it's time, it was scary as shit. In fact it's the movie that scared me the most.Ever.

I'm not particular fond of those types of analogies.

I'll disagree partially. We've all seen the scenes in movies such as this, where a medicine cabinet door closes and you see a ghost standing there in the background. I was totally expecting something like that in the bathroom scene with the little kid. I found it a little extra freaky that not only did a ghost appear during a simple quick camera cut, he was crouched down so his face was like on the kid's shoulder. I saw it coming, just not quite that way. As an added plus, that same ghost made someone in the theatre jump out of their seat and start to walk out, during which they threw up in the aisle. I guess it was the blood?

Overall, I thought it was one of the better horror films I had seen in a while. It's still a little unsettling that a lot of it is based on true events. I'll have to pick up the book sometime to see just how much of it is hollywood though.

Even seeing the commercials for this movie, brings back childhood memories of my fright over the original movie.

The remake was pretty much the same as the original. As far as your horror/thriller movie it is rather bland but its based on true events so thats why I didn't think they were too bad.
