Madden 2006 Shit-talking thread...

Basically, we'll use this thread to talk trash about how someone will kick someone elses ass online and what not.

I suppose we could also use this thread to post news articles and updates and pictures and opinions on new features. If we want.

Also, let me know if you're playing online. Post your s/n and what team you will most likely use. (PS2. None of that X-Box crap) I want to see if we have enough to start a league. WHICH REMINDS ME. I have to cancel last years subscription before they charge me $19.99. WHICH REMINDS ME AGAIN. Who is willing to shell out $19.99 this year for a few special features online?

Nah, just for the Premium Pass. It allows you to create web leagues (which would be cool if we could get enough people), gives you a small rep-boost, and that's about it. I dunno, if they give more features I might buy it. Probly not though.

New QB Vision Control: Use the right analog stick to find open receivers heading for paydirt.
New QB Precision Placement: Use the left analog stick to lead a receiver to an open area, throw away from a defender, and more.
NFL Superstar Mode: Create a Superstar and guide his life on and off the field. Choose an agent, earn one of 60 personas, and live the superstar life.
Enhanced Broadcast Presentation: Authentic new camera angles, improved graphics, and new commentary and cutscenes that provide the look and feel of a real NFL broadcast.
All-New Truck Stick Control: Deliver big hits on offense to break tackles and pancake defenders.

So basically, the only new stuff is a more complex throwing system, new broadcast angles (with ESPN I believe), a more advanced Create-A-Player it looks like, and hit stick on offense. They should have had hit stick on offense last year.

Also, from the early shots of the rookies, it appears they don't have the Cardinals' new uniforms.

I'm going to be bumping this thread once every two weeks or so just to keep the hype up.

______________________________________________________________________
Chances are, if you're an experienced Madden NFL gamer, you've spent more than a little time using the Atlanta Falcons in the game – mainly because quarterback Michael Vick can be practically unstoppable, given his amazing scrambling abilities and his knack for throwing well on the run.

While Vick will still be a force to be reckoned with in Madden NFL 06, the rest of the quarterbacks are coming back to the pack, thanks to this year's emphasis on Vision and Precision. For the first time in years, the Madden NFL passing system has been improved significantly, making a quarterback's ability to see the entire field a very important part of the passing game.

Madden NFL 06 gamers will notice a difference from the first snap of the ball. On passing plays, quarterbacks will have a "Vision Cone" which denotes the direction in which the QB is looking. The size of the Cone is dependent upon the quarterback's talent rating, as well as the skill at which you're playing, and the concept is to use the Cone to look in the direction of the receiver to which you want to throw the ball.

This means the days of rolling out right and throwing a blind bullet pass to the left for an easy 20-yard completion are over – unless you make sure your QB is looking to the left before he throws the ball. The easiest way to look at your intended receiver is to hold the R2 button (on the PlayStation®2 console) and tap the receiver button, which immediately moves the Vision Cone towards that receiver, before you hit the receiver button to actually throw the ball. Using the R2 button method, which is basically a double-tap, the quarterback's head can "snap" quickly to look at the receiver before he throws it.

Alternately, gamers can use the right analog stick to manually move the vision cone left and right, allowing them to look back and forth across the field, trying to spot a receiver. Whether using the R2 button or the right analog stick, however, it will be important for gamers to have their quarterbacks looking in the direction of the receiver before throwing, because any balls thrown in a direction where the quarterback isn't looking have a much better chance of being overthrown, falling short, or even being intercepted.

In fact, at the higher skill levels, gamers won't even be able to throw to receivers outside the vision cone after a period of time, because the receiver's passing icons will fade out if the quarterback doesn't look in his direction for too long.

Old-school Madden NFL players will, of course, have the option to turn off the Vision Cone system and use the previous passing system, but the Vision Cone lends a new air of realism about the game – just ask the guys that actually play the position for a living.

"In most video games, you can just hit a button and the quarterback will just throw it wherever he wants. Now, you really have to know what's going on, you've really go to understand the game," said Cincinnati quarterback Carson Palmer after trying out the new Vision Cone system. "It changes the game and I think it's going to make it more competitive. You can't just go back and hit a button. You've got to know exactly where the receivers are going; you've got to know if they're running a crossing route, an out route, a go route, and you've got to kind of lead them with your vision."

Vision, according to Palmer and several other NFL quarterbacks who have previewed Madden NFL 06, is one of the most important aspects of playing the position.

"That is the the most important thing, in my opinion," Lions quarterback Joey Harrington said of having excellent on-field vision. "You don't have to have the strongest arm, you don't have to be the fastest guy out there, but you have to read and recognize what's going on. Anybody can get out there and chuck the ball 65 yards down the field, but if you don't see the coverage, see where the opening in the zone is, see how the guy is breaking out of his route versus man coverage, you're not going to complete most of your balls."

"Vision is a big thing," added Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. "A lot of times, guys will say 'hey, I didn't see him.' He was wide open, but you didn't see him. Hey, it's your job to see him. You've got a lot of offensive line in front of you, and you've got to find a way."

Another addition to the passing game in Madden NFL 06 is the new Precision Passing system, which gives players greater flexibility as to where they're aiming the ball. By pressing either the left analog stick or the D-pad in the direction you want the ball placed as you throw it, you can aim the ball at a spot near the receiver – high or low, outside or inside, as you try to keep it away from the defensive players.

Precision Passing, according to Jacksonville quarterback Byron Leftwich, "allows you to put the ball where you need to put it. It's low, it's high, right shoulder, left shoulder. The game allows you to throw a low ball and let your guy dive on the ground for the ball so you won't throw the interception or so the ball won't get broken up. EA's doing a great job of making this as real as possible, every year."

Between the Vision Cone and Precision Passing systems, Madden NFL veterans are going to have to add some new skills to their arsenal – but if they choose to use these new enhancements to the passing game when they play, they'll find a level of realism unparalleled in football video game history. Now, it's not just about how fast you are, but how much of the field you see. Stack up a player with a relatively narrow Vision Cone, like a backup quarterback, for instance, against the vision of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, and you'll see the difference.

So say goodbye to the days of Madden NFL gamers wanting to use the Falcons all the time. Vick might still be in demand, but so will Manning, Brady, McNabb and the others that have great vision. And remember: this year, look before you throw.

Wasn't the ability to throw to the top, bottom, left, and right of the reciever in every game? If not, then what took them so long?

How about some early pictures of the rookies. They're pretty rough though and they don't include the Cards' new uniforms yet.

Alex Smith

Carnell "Cadillac" Williams

Adam "Pacman" Jones

Antrel Rolle

Mike Williams

Demarcus Ware

Erasmus Jones...but I don't want to put it on here because I'm pretty sure it's on bean's sig.

Marcus Spears

Aaron Rodgers

Again, the pictures are early and a bit grainy. But I still can't wait.

Superstar mode sounds cool but one feature I wish they included in these games was a feature that the lastest ESPN hockey game had. When drafting players I would like to put them through the paces(visually) so I don't screw up on high draft picks. For example make them do drills so I can check put their speed, hands etc. Anybody agree with me?

Madden Superstars
New mode revealed through official movie.
by Jon Robinson
July 1, 2005 - You've taken your team to the Super Bowl as an owner, as a general manager, but have you ever seen yourself in the game throwing the perfect spiral to win it all? That's the theory behind the new Superstar mode in Madden as you create a player from the parents up. That's right, you select the best set of parents for your athlete. Do you want a father who is an ex-linebacker or a gardener? How about a mom who is a brain surgeon and likes to take karate? Everything from your parents IQ to their occupations and hobbies are listed, and depending on the parents you pick, you'll find which positions your player is best suited for. Your DNA will also affect your stats, including physical skills, immediate exposure, and awareness. From there, tat him up, add some muscles (even adjust the amount of thigh fat), shave his head, give him a blonde afro, the choice is yours.

From there, it's almost time for the draft where you wait it out until your name is called by a team in need of your position. Unfortunately, you won't be called in the first round, so forget about living in a mansion right away. You'll start out in an apartment, and the better you get at the game, the more famous your superstar becomes, the bigger the crib you can obtain. Before the draft, however, you can listen to words of advice from mentors like Terrell Davis who will give you advice about everything from your apartment to the draft to agents to off the field activities like acquiring movie roles.

You sit down for radio interviews where you talk about your favorite food and favorite video game (Madden, of course). You can sign with an agent who best fits your needs, from good negotiation skills to influence, and if you find the right agent, not only will the training institute be open for you to workout in, but you'll have the ability to make more money through endorsements, and if you're good enough, you'll even be able to get your mug on the cover of Madden…let's just hope the curse isn't part of the deal. When first starting out, though, none of the top agents will want to represent you. You'll need to work your way up, then do what every NFL superstar has learned to do, fire your agent and move on to the next best guy.

But before the draft, you'll need to sit down and take a two minute IQ test, just like the Wonderlic test given to all rookies at the combine. It's part intelligence, part psychological as the teams are trying to gauge your awareness and personality type.

Do you enjoy practical jokes?
How wide are the goalposts?
Who was the best player on your team in college?
Have you ever lied to give yourself an advantage?
Do bright colors concern you?

That's right, 20 of the most random questions you can think of.

Answer them all, get your score, then move on to the draft.

Get picked and move on to training camp where you can practice with your new team, even earning points for every yard gained.

Or, if you'd rather head to your agent's office and call a press conference, guaranteeing a trip to the playoffs, or maybe even complain about your new coaching staff (they wouldn't recognize talent if it hit them in the head), it's up to you. This is also the place where you can announce your retirement due to injury, or if you want to start over with a new superstar. You can even import players from NCAA or NFL Street as your superstar, that way you don't need to start over from scratch. And if your created character is already a stud in either one of those games, it gives you an advantage in Madden as he will definitely have better attribute ratings starting out than a player you create from scratch.

As you progress through your career, you'll need to memorize movie lines, talk to the media about how great you are, and of course, make sure your fade is looking clean for your next TV appearance. This is what NFL Superstar mode is all about. Crafting your character to be the next Michael Vick or Donovan McNabb. Taking matters into your own hands and winning the Super Bowl for your team without having to worry about the price of popcorn or peanuts.

Theres about 50 different pictures of the new mode up there. It seems fairly interesting. I don't understand how an airline pilot's IQ is lower than some guy who works in a toll booth, but whatever.

Madden Premiere Party
McNabb, Culpepper, and a host of NFL superstars talk Madden at EA's New York rager.
by Jon Robinson
June 30, 2005 - Byron Leftwich can't escape. He's playing Donovan McNabb at Madden NFL 06, it's Jaguars vs. Eagles, and no matter how far Byron drops back in the pocket, no matter which direction he sprints on the rollout, no matter how many backs he leaves in to block, McNabb's blitzes are sacking the cyber-Leftwich on almost every play, leaving the real quarterback shaking his head.

And McNabb is letting the big man hear it.

"I think that cameraman over there is faster than you," he says as Leftwich pauses the game to investigate the one thing that's on the minds of just about every NFL player these days, his ratings in Madden NFL 06.

"They gave me a 48 speed!" Leftwich yells, hoping to catch the ear of the Madden producers walking around the ESPN Zone in Times Square at the first ever Madden's Gone Gold party. "Even the long snapper is faster than me."

"They got you a little slow this year," I tell him.

"Ain't no little about it," Leftwich laughs. "They got all my other skills fine. I just wish I was faster than the waiter."

At this point, Tony Gonzalez and Trent Green walk over to add their own jabs at Leftwich's slow-mo moves, as the players cycle through the ratings of each player in the game, calling out everyone who is faster than Leftwich.

And there were a lot of names to be called.

Byron looked at McNabb like, you're on the cover, can't you help a player out? But all McNabb wanted to do was keep playing, keep sacking, and keep running up the score on every gamer in the party.

McNabb took out Leftwich with ease. He put a beating on Culpepper. He even came up to me and asked me if I had a chance to tighten up my skills since E3.

In the end, just about everybody in the house learned a valuable lesson: Never play a player at his own game.

Especially when that player is rated a 97 overall.

There was one player in particular who wanted a shot at McNabb, though, and that was his NFC East rival Michael Strahan.

"I love the Hit Stick," Strahan says. "I love hitting Donovan, even in real life. It's just natural for me. Donovan just feels good in my arms…and I mean that in a purely heterosexual way."

Later in the night, I ask McNabb how it feels to be in Strahan's arms, again, in a purely heterosexual way. "You know what, the problem with him, he has an identity crisis," McNabb replies. "It's a little tough for him right now. They had a down year last year, and he's trying to blame the Eagles for that. As you can see, though, he was trying to play as the Eagles over there on Madden, so he might be trying to work his way on over to Philadelphia. I'm not the one to gossip, but look how soft he looks over there. Buttery soft, pimpish looking shoes…that's why I need the Truck Stick to run him over right now."

And McNabb wasn't the only quarterback excited about the new Truck Stick, the new controls in the game that enable the man with the ball to lower his shoulder and smash defenders to the turf.

"I'm so slow, I'm not going to run anybody over," Leftwich chimes in. "But I'm glad the offense is finally getting an opportunity. The game has been all about the defense the past few years, so I'm glad they're getting back to pumping up the offensive side of the ball."

"I like the Truck Stick," says Daunte Culpepper as he uses his character to blast through a safety. "It makes my character more realistic. Let me run some people over. Let me do what I do."

But after a few more plays, even Culpepper succumbed to the call of the ratings.

"They have me at a 98 overall, so I'm pretty happy about that. I feel I can be a 99, but I can live with it. Gives me room to improve."

Michael Strahan was so worried about his ratings, he didn't even want to play as the Giants. "You can judge your own performance by how they rate you in Madden. You can tell if you had a good year or a bad year when the new Madden comes out and you check your ratings. If you're rated bad, your year was probably horrible. I'm afraid to even look at my ratings in 06. I'm just hoping they go by past performance."

Meanwhile, Roy Williams of the Lions obsessed over not only his own ratings, but the ratings of every player in the NFL. That's right, he literally spent over an hour cycling through ever player, position by position, including free agents, to compare the ratings in every category, debating with one of the game's producers about who is too fast, who is too slow in the game. Once Williams finished his ratings survey, he began creating his own character in the new Superstar mode. He named his player Austin Williams, made sure he was from Texas, then skipped ahead to the Wonderlic test given to players at the combine.

What is your favorite type of cartoon?

The eighth month of the year is…

What word is the opposite of tenacious?

Are you sarcastic?

Do you like talking about work?

Heavy is to light as bold is to…

Airplane is to bird as submarine is to…

If you're stranded on a desert island would you take a playbook, mirror, or diary?

Roy completes the test and scores a 70%.

Then it's on to the barber shop where Williams makes sure Austin has the bald is beautiful look, mirroring his real-life counterpart.

I turn to Marcus Trufant of the Seahawks and ask him about the real road to becoming a superstar. If I really landed a seven-figure deal, what should I buy first?

"For everybody out there, it goes cars, jewelry, then a house. Everybody gets a new car when they get drafted, then they go out and get a little jewelry, and then it's time for a new house. That's when they get the 50-inch screens, the surround sound, and the furniture that's out of this world. Then you move up and you buy yourself a couple of new treats. I bought myself an Escalade when I was drafted, and I'm still rolling in that. I even hooked up my videogames in the car so I can do my thing on the road. I make sure someone else is driving if I want to play, though. I don't want that headline in the paper. I don't want to be that guy."

I ask Donovan McNabb and he has some very different financial advice for me. "Don't get caught up in the jewelry. Don't get caught up in the cars. The first thing you should go out and buy is something you've always loved. The first thing I bought was a dog. I bought two dogs, they were Mastiffs, but the dogs got too big, and I started traveling so much they started looking at me funny, so they had to go. But if you wanted to go the materialistic route, get a nice place to stay first. You can't have a nice car if you don't have a place to live. Who wants a $50,000 car if you're living in a two-bedroom apartment? Don't be living with your parents with a Benz outside, that don't look good."

How E-40ish of him. Not that I'll ever need the advice, but it's much appreciated. The one gameplay feature most appreciated by the players, however, is the new Vision and Precision Passing.

"You can ask any of the 2,000 quarterbacks they have at this party, they're throwing to spots on the field, not to the receiver, so this is a lot more realistic," Micahel Strahan says with a smirk. "I think Daunte just throws the dang thing up, myself. I don't even think he aims at anybody. But these guys definitely throw to a spot, so when they talk about quarterbacks and their timing with receivers, this is really what they mean, and they did a great job of capturing that in the game."

Tony Gonzalez agrees: "That's how the game is played in real life and now it has finally carried over to the videogame. Madden keeps getting better and better. There doesn't seem like there's anything else they can improve on at this point, especially with the passing. The quarterback is looking downfield, and if he switches and all of a sudden throws the ball where he wasn't looking, he's not going to be accurate. These are some great adjustments to the game."

"It's real tight," adds Daunte Culpepper. "The quarterback vision actually forces you to pay attention to your receivers more, about the spacing, and makes you feel more like a real quarterback."

But will anyone want to play as the Vikings without Moss, arguably one of the most dominant videogame athletes of all time?

"Troy Williamson is extremely fast and he's a great receiver. Nobody in the league can replace Moss and what he brings to the team, but this gives an opportunity for all of the other guys to step up and make plays. We don't need one guy, we need a team. Our defense is going to be extremely good, extremely fast, and we're going to be an exciting team. I can't wait to see how we're going to play."
Even cover-athlete McNabb checked in on his stats. "Peyton Manning has better vision than me, and my speed is a bit lower than Tony Gonzalez's, but we might setup a race out here in Times Square to settle that dispute."

The players continue to battle, continue to talk trash, then the conversation flips toward the future as everyone wonders what is ahead for the longest running NFL game on the market, and now with EA's exclusivity deal, the only NFL videogame currently available.

Marcus Trufant is looking for a little help for his fellow defensive backs: "They need to add a power jam where the corners can shove the receivers out of bounds. There's no love for the cornerbacks…no love."

Tony Gonzalez has some ideas of his own, as well as some info on Madden 360. "They did a head scan of me at the Pro Bowl for the new systems. They put a cap on me, then it's almost like the Matrix where they do this 360-scan of your head where you have this equipment all around you, almost like a sphere. It was cool. I can't wait to see what my character looks like. In a couple of years, you'll probably feel it when Ray Lewis hits you. Maybe they'll let you input your name and you'll actually hear the NFL players talking trash about you in the game. That would be amazing."

To Madden Bowl champ Michael Lewis of the Eagles, he only wants one new thing in the game. "No more curse," he laughs while looking over at the picture of his quarterback on the cover. "You know, I talked to Donovan about the Madden curse, but we don't think it's real. We hope not. I pray to God it's not real."

McNabb nods his head in agreement, "No curse. Not this year," he says. "Now where's Tony Gonzalez, we have a race setup outside."

I'd pay to see that.

The only thing better would be Leftwich racing against the waiter and cameraman.

"48 speed. You'd think I was on crutches or something," Leftwich adds as he puts on his sunglasses and grabs his cell phone before leaving the party. "Great game, I just wish I was faster than our long snapper."

LOL at Leftwich at a 48 speed. I would have posted a new article or some new pictures, but this is all they have.

It seems that helmets fly off 3-4 times in one game.
