DISCUSSION - Who should Chris Benoit face at Wrestlemania 20? (beware - RR spoilers)

DISCUSSION - Who should Chris Benoit face at Wrestlemania 20? (beware - RR spoilers)

First off - I'm happy as hell that Benoit won the Royal Rumble. Good move WWE.

On to other things, who should Benoit face at Wrestlemania? Seems like the WWE can go with several routes. They can have Benoit face either Brock Lesnar (although it seems highly doubtful since Brock will probably be facing Goldberg), Kurt Angle (perhaps Goldberg will get revenge on Lesnar and cost him the title against Angle), or Triple H (where Benoit 'defects' to Raw and faces the champ).

For the purposes of this thread, I'm going to assume that Lesnar and Goldberg are a LOCK for Wrestlemania. Therefore - Benoit will face either Angle or Triple H. Who would you rather see him face?

Kurt Angle (advantages)
-Benoit and Angle would have a better match from a technical standpoint.
-Benoit wouldn't have to 'defect' to Raw.....a place where 'sports entertainment' is valued more than pure wrestling.
-Benoit has never won the title. Angle has never won the title at Wrestlemania. The WWE could really use that storyline to their advantage....and see "who's dream gets fulfilled".

Triple H (advantages)
-Since Triple H has been made to look like the 'second coming of Jesus Christ' in the past year and a half or so, Benoit getting the victory over Triple H would "mean more" for Benoit....and would do more for his career. Fans would consider a clean victory over Triple H to be far more "meaningful" than a win over Angle......and hence, the marks would respect him more.

I think a Benoit/Triple H match would be great for WrestleMania. Benoit really sold the Rumble last night, and how he made that speech afterwards. I can only see Benoit facing someone he hasn't really feuded with at WMXX. Besides, I liked the Triple H/Benoit match I saw in 2000 somewhere.

While Triple H has looked much better in last two months or so, you have to understand that Triple H is nowhere near the wrestler he was in 2000.

First off I'ed also like to say that I'm happy as hell that Beniot got what he deserves. The storyline already started with Triple H as you saw when Evolution played Beniot during his promo.Let's go Beniot.

Cool, but consider my thoughts from this thread. http://www.tpww.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3914

Do you REALLY want to see Benoit go to Raw? (or would it be better if Triple H came to Smackdown).

Right now I don't think the match quality is as important as Benoit winning the title. Wrestlemania is the biggest opportunity any wrestler has to become one of the best. Chris Benoit is on a mad push to the top, and I think that not getting AT LEAST a title shot would destroy his push.

If Benoit's title shot is against Triple H, Benoit will obviously move to RAW and feud with Evolution. In my opinion I think Evolution will be made to look superior to Benoit during the advent ot Wrestlemania. In that case, Benoit will be made to look like the underdog against Triple H, which would also hurt his push. Benoit would have to win the World title to redeem himself or else his whole push, including winning the Royal Rumble, is a total waste.

Assuming that Kurt Angle somehow wins the WWE title before Wrestlemania, and Benoit chooses to face him at Wrestlemania then there is a better chance of Benoit's push not being misused. Angle and Benoit will most likely be made to look like equal competetors during the advent to Wrestlemania. One can assume that Angle vs. Benoit is a higher caliber match than Triple H vs. Benoit. If Benoit defeats Angle for the WWE title, he simply proves that he's a better wrestler than Angle. Whether or not that's a good thing is another issue.

MY choice: Chris Beniot vs. Kurt Angle would be the best World title match in Benoit's best interest.

Damnit looks like it's HHH, that's cool and all if he wins but I would have prefered he win the WWE title because he's already held the World Championship in it's previous form and to me it's still not the main WWE championship

Raw Spoiler

As much as I would love to see the Anti-Christ of Wrestling tap out to the Crossface, it isn't going to happen. Think about it; you're in the World Title match, at the biggest wrestling show in history. You've got more pull backstage than Hulk Hogan ever did. And your opponent keeps catching crap for being "boring." Would you want to be remembered as the guy who lost on the biggest stage of them all? Hell no. Especially if you don't do it on regular TV. There is absolutely no way Benoit's going to walk out of WMXX with the strap.

I'm predicting there'll be a ref bump right before Benoit locks in the Crossface. HHH taps out to pretend like he's putting Benoit over, but there's no one to call for the bell. Sledgehammer, kick-wham-Pedigree, 1-2-3, I throw my remote into the TV screen. Benoit may win a rematch, but it wouldn't matter. Not if they had 100 rematches and Benoit won every one of them. Because Benoit will have lost on the biggest, most important match of his career, and therefore will never get over again.

Pessimism is such a wonderful invention. Either you're right, or you're pleasantly surprised.

I'd much rather see Angle-Benoit match at Mania over anything else.

However, I'm still not ruling out the fact that Michaels could take the belt from HHH, making wrestle mania main event to be Michaels-Benoit match.

Think Benoit should have just been put against Lesnar... It'd just have sealed the deal that he could make Lesnar tap. Brock really needs to lose, imo, Benoit is the last one on the SD roster that doesn't make me laugh if a match him vs. Lesnar would take place.
