Kane was always able to speak, albeit he did have damaged vocal cords. This would be a life long problem. Before he debuted Paul Bearer would basicly hire people to try to fight Kane so he could make sure Kane was at his best.
One day Paul hired a very big, tough, mean motherfucker. His name was Snitsky. Kane still beat the hell out of him, but Snitsky got a few throat shots which damaged Kane's vocal cords. That explains the voice box, and why he no longer needs it. It healed.

Oh, by the way, his real name isn't Kane It's Glenn Jacob Calloway. Kane is his mother's maiden name. He took on that name because of the Kane family curse, which you'll have to read about.

And it was his fault.
