The Edukators

Just watched this German film on Sky Cinema tonight. I think they're doing a world cinema season or something like that so it'll probably be on again.

First heard about it at the end of 2004 when the IFI had it on in Dublin but I couldn't make it. It's about 2 friends who style themselves as a socialist revolutionary group known as The Edukators. They break into rich people's homes when they're empty, but don't steal anything, instead re-arranging the furniture and leaving a message signed off with "The Edukators."

One of them has a girlfriend who is deeply in debt to a businessman after wrecking his car in an accident and she persuades the other guy (not her boyfriend) to perform one of their break-ins on the businessman.

From then things go sort of wrong and they end up kidnapping him.

Don't want to ruin the plot further. The film does get a bit heavy handed and perhaps a bit contrived at times with the political diatribe from the young folk, but that's a minor thing, very minor. If you can look past that, if you're a conservative type, it's a very good film about the difference between young people and older people in today's world, about how attitudes change as you grow older, about the strength of ideals and friendship.

I also found the girl in it very attractive in an unusual sort of way.

Good show.

From Paul Berne's autobiography:

Damien Gates tried to use me as a way back into football. That dirty English cunt knew his career was finished and he tried to drag me down with him, attempting to keep me up by reminising about the old times. I could see beneath his lies however, right to the point where I just wanted to smack that bastard.

'I knew I hadn't played well that day, I knew the team hadn't performed to his capabilities but by golly, his head shake made me want to destroy his face'
