Graphics card drivers

So I was recommended to update my video card drivers off the Nvidia website since i've been using the same drivers forever now off the CD (dated september 2004) but when I removed the old ones and put the latest drivers on (for some reason it has one 60mb file for every video card?) it made my PC lag to shit when I went on a webpage with a streaming video on it, so I don't even want to see what happens when I play a game with it.

I went back to the old drivers, but my PC still feels a tad laggy now and then. I'm running an Athlon 64bit 3700+, 2 gigs of RAM and a Geforce 6600GT AGP, is my video card whats making my PC not run as smooth as it should?
