Conan O'Brien fighting fire with fire?

Has anyone else noticed that Conan O'Brien is doing more political sketches recently? Conan has never shied away from politics, but it seems he's utilising political satire more. I'm not complaining, Conan's political skits are hilarious. Remember the one where he showed all the people the Republicans labelled "Democrats". The allegorical sketch he did last night was fantastic, as well.

I think the reason for all this realpolitiking is primarily to try and ease the edge Jon Steward and the Daily Show criminally have over Late Night. I think Conan is angling for that Emmy next year, and I wish him luck in getting it, as I enjoy Conan's politcal humour more.

Am I the only one who's noticed this? What do you think Conan's chances are taking on Stewart and his writers in the political game? Is Conan just trying to change the direction of his show, and do something different with it before he's sentenced to The Tonight Show? Is he trying to build up his audience by reeling in the Stewart/Colbert crowd?

I'm a huge Conan fan, and it's just something I've noticed since the Emmys this year.
