Some RVD Thoughts
So last night I threw in SummerSlam 2001. One of the matches that really got my attention was the RVD/Jeff Hardy ladder match. I liked this match a lot, lots of creative use of the ladder, some crazy spots and it was like you could feel what both guys were going through to win this match. In my opinion, the match stole the show, showcasing the talents of RVD and Jeff Hardy. It showed me that Jeff Hardy had (has) the potential to be a solid mid to upper card wrestler despite what some (Vince) would perceives as his small size.
On to RVD. I believe it was KK who said in another thread that no one came into WWE hotter than RVD. He was right, at the time he was insanely over and had a moveset as diverse as anyone at the time. I look at RVD now. Yeah, some people say that he is getting a bad deal from WWE cause he never held the world title. Yeah, he's been held back blah blah blah, but I look at him now, he's a shell of himself. Its not even close to what he was 5 years ago. I'll be honest and say I don't watch ECW much but from what I've seen of the guy he doesn't exactly scream giving full effort anymore. This is a guy who's as athletically gifted as anyone yet looks like he's running through the motions. Perhaps we should consider that as a reason he never made it to the top of WWE. When he came in, he was the RVD we all knew and loved, but was somewhat reckless and injured a few people in the ring. (None serious) Now we have what appears to be RVD just milking it to the end of his contract. Yes I expect to hear drug referances, but the drug thing was the final nail in the coffin, not necessarily what killed him early on |
