Help Getting my 360 Online

Okay, here's my problem with getting my 360 online. I connect via a wireless reciver. The router that sends the signal is 3 rooms away.
I want to get on XBox live, but that I can't seem to figure it out, and the paper work is MIA.
Do I need to break down and get a wireless reciver or is there a way I can do it from my computer?
