Though some slides at GDC spoiled the surprise, Harmonix and Traveler's Tales have made Lego Rock Band official today with an announcement. The game is due out this year for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, with a separate DS version being developed in partnership with Backbone Entertainment. Some parents may like the idea of music games but be uncomfortable with the lyrics in most games, so this one is posing itself as a "family-friendly music experience." So far, five songs have been announced for the game, noted for being "suitable for younger audiences":
"Song 2" -- Blur
"Kung Fu Fighting" -- Carl Douglas
"The Final Countdown" -- Europe
"Boys and Girls" -- Good Charlotte
"So What" -- Pink
Using the signature Lego style, players can customize their own avatars as well as their roadies and crew. The game also supports Rock Band and "other music game" controllers. "Rock Band is a social game experience that crosses every generation and every genre of rock," said Bob Picunko, senior VP of electronic games for MTV Games. "Harmonix and MTV Games are big fans of the Lego game franchise and excited to work with TT Games to develop a new take on Rock Band that focuses on great music and Lego humor that's fun for the whole family."

While I find this news a little weird that the next Lego game is basically the next Rock Band game...it does excite me with hopes that perhaps characters from their other Lego titles will be playable in this. I would love to rock out the guitar as Indiana Jones...or Vader
