The next few months will be very important to NXT's future. While Season 2 is going on, I'm assuming some of the rookies from Season 1 (Barrett obviously, Bryan, Otunga, and probably Gabriel) will find their way to the main roster. If half of the rookies see SOME success, WWE may think "sweet, this is a great way to bring in new guys" and continue to run NXT beyond Season 2 (the timeslot is going away, so it could be a WWE.com web show or something)
