Torrent help - I'm a technodunce (New problem with AVI files on disc)

Yeah, I'm really crap with most technology but I want to start downloading shows and stuff. A friend of mine suggested to use Vuze. So I installed that and then I used Pirate Bay to download a couple of things. Are those good to use?

Anyway, I managed to stumble over those couple of obstacles fine enough, and the files I've downloaded are AVI files, which is all well and good if I wanted to watch stuff on my laptop, but I would rather watch them on my TV (get too distracted when I've got my laptop on as well ). So basically I want to watch them on my X-Box, but I'm not on X-Box Live so AVI files won't play without some media upgrade. What's a good way around this? Is a file converter to turn those AVI's into WMV's a good idea? Should I just give up? Help please.
