The hissing waste is so large they hadd to change the scale of the map. Its not the number of zones that makes it big though its that if you traveled 30 paces north on both maps you would have traveled 30% as far on the map in the hissing waste.

Its a huge vast desert and you really feel like it is when you have to cover ground there.
