It was a cool angle and I was impressed by AJ's ability to go from beloved face character who was actually kind of bland "depth" wise, to absolutely vicious way more interesting heel. (I liked AJ's straight laced face character but he was very by the book... which worked for him).
However, the only problem I foresee is what the whining Owens of the world do foresee. There's going to be some very generic superman booking... AJ may get one win with help from his homies, and then Cena will probably beat him AND the club in a bajillion on one handicap match and then they settle in as an entertaining and probably quite prevalent upper mid card act. I do believe the cream rises to the top and much like Kevin Owens at the very least AJ will be a go to guy, but not even being "down" on the booking or writing, it just isn't their (AJ) style(s) to run with a fun dominant heel act that isn't their own creation. They really believe that Cena/Reigns/Orton or whomever is super face de jour have to be kept strong unless HHH is the heel and it's in the early mid 2000s. Also, it is super cool that AJ has this opportunity at this point of his career to be featured agains Cena in such a high profile feud, whether he goes over or not. He will surely put on show after show, and I do think him making Roman look so good got him over with the top dogs who make the decisions. I am interested to see where it goes. What I don't look forward to is Stephanie aligning herself with OR castrating the club, but again, that's the booking style and we can just fast forward those parts
