Downloading songs on KaZaA

Is downloading songs on kazaa illegal now? I've heard mixed reports. Some reports said that it wasn't illegal. Some said you are allowed to download songs, but it's illegal to share them online.

I know I usually check out a few bands I've heard about, then I go buy their CD(s) if I like their music.

Can anyone help me out with this one, I guess I could always do some good old research, but if someone knows for sure, can ya help me outs?
