WWE going back to the future?
WWE the last several months seems as if they are returning to the formula that made them successful during the 1980s. They bring back the legends every now and then, they are returning to the interview segments (i.e. Highlight Reel, The Cabana), recreating certain 1980s moments with different wrestlers (Big Show getting his hair shaved by Angle last year - shades of Big John Studd and Ken Patera raping Andre the Giant of his dignity in 1985), the Masterlock Challenge (Hercules Hernandez did something similar with the full nelson), Mighty Molly losing to Victoria at WM XX (shades of Adrian Adonis going humpty dumpty look after losing to Roddy Piper at WM III), Hassan (heat like the Iron Sheik), Hogan getting Pearl Harbored by HBK (shades of Hogan getting Pearl Harbored by Paul Orndorff in 1986 then receiving several piledrivers to boot). The matches are less extreme/hardcore and offer more athleticism/technical wrestling than it was before. One more obvious change in direction: the champions are reigning for longer periods. I don't recall a WWE titlist holding their belts for very long in the Attitude era. In fact, it's unheard of for a JBL to hold that belt as long as he did til he dropped it to Cena, Shelton Benjamin's IC reign was pretty long (I believe it was the longest reign since the Ultimate Warrior or Mr. Perfect held the belt in the late 80s/early 90s). One more thing: Carlito walking out and taking the count-out (shades of Greg "The Hammer" Valentine saving his back vs. Tito Santana for a full year (1984-85). Opinions?
For The Godfather, they should bring back "The Doctor of Style Slick" and put him in his corner... that would be a dream combo! LOL |
