Wrestling's Greatest Feuds: Vol 2

Hey and welcome back. Yesterday I kicked off my new series of columns with two mega stars from the early 90's. Today we keep with some early 90's feuds and take a look back at two former partners who would go on and sqaure off with each other at Wrestlemania 8. One guy was already established in the wrestling industry and was on his last legs as a major player for the WWF. The other was just starting to become a breakout star and would go on to become one of the greatest stars the Federation had ever seen.

Jake Roberts vs The Undertaker

The Dark Alliance

During the spring of 1991, The Undertaker had been in a feud with the Ultimate Warrior. This was right after Warrior's Wrestlemania 7 match with Savage that we discussed yesterday. The Undertaker seemed like Warrior's toughest opponent to date as he seemed to have the Warrior's number. On an episode of the Funeral Parlor, an interview segment with Paul Bearer as the host, Undertaker locked the Warrior in a casket. It took about a team of 10 men, some power tools and a 3 hour time block to get the lid open, but then they did, Warrior lay motionless.

Enter Jake Roberts or The Snake Man as Warrior would refer to him. Something tells me he referred to him as that backstage as well. Jake Roberts took it upon himself to go to the Warrior and help him battle the dark side. Roberts had been a card carrying member of the dark side for a while, so who better to help the Warrior out? Jake Roberts would put Warrior through some insane tests like burying him alive or locking him in a casket. Warrior never claimed to be a bright guy, but you would think he would of thought something was a little fucked up here. For the last test Jake locked Warrior in a tomb full of snakes. Suddenly a cobra attacked the Ultimate Warrior. As Jake unlocked the door, Warrior came stumbling out and as the camera panned up, there was The Undertaker and Paul Bearer smiling right beside Jake "Satan" Roberts. Warrior had been swerved.

The Wedding

A few months later, Jake "Satan" Roberts and The Undertaker would continue on there path to take out the big guns of the WWF. This time it was Macho Man Randy Savage. Summerslam 91 was the big date for Randy as he was to be married to the one and only, Miss Elizabeth. The stage was set, the wedding bells chimed and the presents were literally being torn open. I kid you not, Savage had the manners of a three year old as he tore open present after present like a maniac during the reception backstage. Finally we were coming down to the last of the presents when Miss Elizabeth would get the honors of opening one with a cobra inside. Yes, a fucking cobra. Who in their right minds, besides maybe the psycho from Saw, gives a live cobra as a gift? Well Jake Roberts does. Three seconds later Jake Roberts and Undertaker crash the reception. People start screaming, Savage gets blasted in the head with an urn (LOL!) and Jake, who I swear is on crack during this, starts screaming at Elizabeth. Jake takes the cobra and puts it right in Liz's face while shouting some nasty things at her just like an abusive husband. Except this is Jake Roberts and he's no abusive husband, he's the god dam Devil.

Undertaker has a change of Heart

Randy Savage and Jake Roberts would have an awesome feud during the next couple of months as Undertaker kept by Jake's side along the way. During an episode of Saturday Night Main Event, Randy Savage took on Jake Roberts. Savage would score the win. Jake would take off backstage after the match. As Liz and Savage made there way backstage, there was Jake Roberts waiting for them with a steel chair. Something was going down. The camera panned back and forth between Jake screaming shit was holding the chair and Savage and Liz getting closer and closer to him. Just as Liz was about to get plastered, The Undertaker comes up from behind and takes the chair from Jake. Jake couldn't believe it as Savage picked up the chair and plastered Jake in the back with it.

In the next week or so, Jake Roberts appeared on an episode of the Funeral Parlor, where he asked Taker who's side he was on. Taker said he wasn't with Jake. Jake, being a sly little devil, acted like it was cool, but as soon as Taker turned his back, Jake picked up a chair and nailed him. Jake then locked Taker's hand in the casket and gave Bearer a pretty sweet DDT.

Wrestlemania

The face off between the two former friends would occur at Wrestlemania 8. It was the Devil himself taking on his former right hand man. This would become Jake's final match for the WWF at the time. Jake would end up hitting like 5 DDT's on Taker, but that couldn't get the job done. Taker would amount a comeback, before hitting the tombstone and sending Jake packing. A new force in the Federation was born and this time he had the people behind him.

Well that does it for today. This edition had a few feuds wrapped up into one, so I hope you enjoyed it. Stay tuned for more next time.

Adios.

Hot stuff. I remember really hating Jake through his feud with Savage.
