He's a generic young American highschool student forced into a situation he's unfamiliar with, a bit of a weirdo that the presumably nerdy audience of equally white young American highschool students can identify with by placing themselves in the shoes of, maybe even living out fantasies of escapism and acceptance by outside sources through him.
