Yeah I actually know that but it came years after doing it and actually reading the game instructions of one of the games. Essentially, I could have took out the cartrige, sacrificed a virgin and came to the same result but if I tried it first and it worked there would be a whole load less virgins in the world.

It's unfortunate that the whole thing wasn't made clearer, at least for those of us that did believe sacrificing virgins would make the NES play.

Besides the initial batch of NES systems that were defective when it was 1st released in Japan, the top-loader design was meant to be the design for the NES in the US but had to be changed to the VCR/toaster style since no store would want a console after the Atari mess a year earlier.

Ends up the toaster design would over time bend the pins and cause problems which is why its harder to find a non-fixed NES still working compared to the top-loaders.

My next system purchase may be a nex or a used atari lynx. Maybe I'll just buy that new 3-D version of monopoly. I feel like I'm getting kind of old for video games, anyway.

You can never be too old for games. Most of my friends list consist of people aged 40+.

Apparently, though other companies across the electronics field can keep their products as reliable as in the eighties, there is something about consoles that makes it unrealistic to expect from their manufacturers.

I'm very old fashioned in the sense that I won't buy something that I know has a possibility of breaking through design and not through what I do to it. My brother has went through all kinds of hell with his but he loves his X Box so much that it could break every week and he'd still go back for more. He's forever telling me how this has broke so he's had to borrow the part from somebody else's that they are not using etc. It does seem like they are getting better at making it work but they aren't half 'lucky' that they have brand loyalty like they do. If it was something with more competitors in the market, you'd have to think they'd be dead in the water although in reality they would put more effort into making sure it was perfect first time.

In the end it's no coincidence that the failure rates closely follow how much the companies have riding on the success of their products. Nintendo obviously have the most to lose, if their failure rates were higher they would have a lot more to lose. Sony can absorb the failures slightly better but they need the edge over Microsoft in this area otherwise they would lose more customers to them. Microsoft, I'd expect, are all about lowering their current failure rate as low as possible to make the product more attractive but the fact that they can sustain within what I would call a high failure rate is quite impressive. I think it's fair to say that this due to their marketing, available games and in a sense they must have a remarkable customer service (whether it's turnaround times or whatever).

Mcrosoft's customer service has been terrible. They're the #2 console only because they were first to market, captured most of the developers, and Sony made dumb decisions. For example, they took an extra year to put BD in. That probably won Blu-Ray the HD war, but it didn't do the PS3 any favors.
