It's promising that all Doug's hints at future storylines revolve around character exploration thus far. Whether he's thinking ahead towards a limited budget, or simply changed his mindset as to how he wants the show to go forward, a return to the smaller, character driven focus of the earlier series may signal a return to form.
The problem is, the 8 million viewers who regularly watched the show towards the end of its BBC run will expect the action sci-fi comedy of the later Red Dwarf years, and simply decry anything else as "not as good as it used to be" (much like Part 1 of Back to Earth two years ago). I'm not saying it was as good as the original series, but most people I know who didn't like it said it was "boring". They were expecting more along the lines of a 'Gunmen of the Apocalypse' than a 'Thanks For The Memory'. If the Dave budget is going to be a struggle, I'd be happy with more from the same well as the latter. |
