So, even though I'm only 3 matches into it, I can already tell I cannot stand this game.
First, the controls. I loved FNR4 and still play it every once and a while. I think the control scheme in that game was perfect. It seems like EA can't get a proper control scheme for any of the FNR games and they tweak it a little bit in the sequel only to have people complain about how the last one was great and didn't need tweaking. That's what happened for me here. I was so used to the FNR4 controls that I'm going to piss and moan until my brain eventually figures out these new ones. And it seems like they're trying to cater to every fan of the series out there but in the process can't establish their own style. There are like 9 different button configurations. (None of them being the one I want, of course.) If you're going to stick with something, then stick with it. So ok, they took out the dramatic upswings and quarter circles and half rotations and what have you. I got used to and loved that control scheme, but fine. I'll deal with it. So now all punches are a simple flick of the joystick (or a button press). One simple flick. I'm fine with that. After all, it makes the game easier, more accessible to beginners and makes it easier to land a combo. In theory. But it doesn't work because the gameplay is so slow. The boxers themselves move slow. The new camera angle is nice and "swoopy", but also very slow. In later rounds, when boxers have less stamina and are supposed to move slow, they move slower than what's supposed to feel "slow". If you're going to improve the control scheme to make it more streamlined, why not also improve the responses of those inputs? Sometimes I have an incredibly difficult time landing a simple 3 punch combo. Not even "landing" it, just simply throwing those punches. It's hard to tell what EA is going for here. An action packed fighter or an appropriate boxing sim? They take away the health bars (on default. You can add them under settings), take out the corner game, take out the block meter, added a new punch, took out the ability to push, added the ability to punch while blocking, and a lot of tweaks. And I honestly don't know how to categorize these tweaks. If they're going for "sim" by taking out the block meter then they completely negated that by being able to punch while blocking. AND AUTO BLOCK ITSELF. I almost skipped right over that. The game is going to block for you? That's half of boxing right there is knowing how to block. You're telling me all I have to do now is hold RT and not worry about if he's going high or low? And I can just keep coming at him with jabs? And the game won't mind? Fucking sweet. And then the overall lack of additional anything. One new venue worth giving a crap about. A whole bunch of "new" fighters who were 100 times better in FNR4's create system. An improved television presentation but nowhere near where it needs to be. Disappointing. Going to start that campaign mode tonight probably. Hopefully that will be good and I can wrap my brain around the new control scheme when I get into it. Only to have EA completely switch it around on me the next game. Can't wait. |
