Owen was very hurt by Montreal and wanted to leave. Vince held onto refused let Owen go because he knew Owen would go to WCW. Bischoff was prepared to pay Owen the same amount he was getting in WWE with lighter schedule.

Owen tried to make peace with shawn but they just wanted to bury him. He was called a "nugget". In the match with shawn they potatoed Owen with the crutches.

I thought Owen actually did leave (obvi not all the way to WCW) but returned a short while after.
