Rick = Superman/Goku, Shane = Batman/Vegeta

It's fairly obvious that's the set-up they have here. Rick has to be the goody-good while Shane plays the foil. Only in the event of Shane's death would they darken up Rick. And yeah, it would take something happening to Lori or Carl to reach that point.
