I fail to see how that ending was underwhelming at all. The motives were explained. We have clarity that the McMahons are now a cohesive unit and, presumably, have formed a new version of The Corporation. They trot out the hero only to be huge dicks and have him get the shit beaten out of him. Even then, he got offense on The Shield. The roster was there, but they couldn't intervene. And let's be real, Cena just left and he's the only guy on the roster who would normally say "fuck it" and help anyway.

You can't blow your load and have Bryan beat the fuck out of people right away like some people seem to want to have happened.
