What? I got the impression he went the other way, calling her out ("you knew for a year and I told you to keep shut"), knowing the police were there. Of course, he did leave out the whole car wash laundering bit so maybe I misinterpreted that phone call...

I agree, I think he was trying to clear Skylar of any wrongdoing knowing that the police were listening. Skylar caught on mid conversation as well. He also started to cry during the conversation, knowing how difficult it would be to try to make the speech convincing. Probably something that wouldn't be done if he was trying to "call her out".
