Could have held off that promo by Cody until after next week's match since the stip of the Battle Royal already locked in the winner as his first challenger.

They had a similar snafu with the tag title contenders since they currently have 2 at the moment but had explained it better. Best Friends won #1 Contender's rights for the next PPV while Sabian/Havoc only won the rights for the next tv show.
