Wouldn't that contract make him the 6th highest paid player in baseball? You really think he is going to get more?

It's not what I think, it's what he (and his agent) think.

Do you think he thinks another team is gonna offer him more though? I can't think of a team that could use a CF and has that type of money.

Texas, Anaheim, Boston, Philadelphia, Seattle (next year), Atlanta(next year), there are tons. And who says he doesn't move to RF or LF. People look at the offensive stats, not the position of outfielders too much.

I was watching on sportsnet that sources say Vernon has agreed to the deal, they're just getting final approval from Ted Rogers. I would have thought that they had that first before even offering the contract but apparently not.

The thing is, if Vernon was being signed by another team, I don't think he would be worth that much, but for Toronto to resign him, I think he is.
Does that theory make sense to anybody else? Like I think overpaying somebody to come in and expect them to help your team is a lot different than overpaying somebody who has been with you for a while and who clearly fits into your teams success. |

Some more news:
Red Sox acquired RHP Brendan Donnelly from the Angels for LHP Phil Seibel. Red Sox signed LHP J.C. Romero, who had been with the Angels, to a one-year contract. Astros announced the retirement of first baseman Jeff Bagwell. Bagwell didn't finish with 500 homers or a .300 average, but he needs to go into the Hall of Fame, probably on the first ballot. In 15 seasons, he hit .297/.408/.540 with 449 homers, 1.529 RBI and 1,517 runs scored. His OPS ranks 24th all-time, and much of his production came in the Astrodome, a pitcher's park. Over a two-season span in 1999-2000, he hit 89 homers, scored 295 runs and drove in 262. His 152 runs in 2000 is the highest total anyone's managed since Lou Gehrig in 1936. However, he was at his absolute best in 1994, hitting .368/.451/.750 with 116 RBI in 110 games before a broken hand ended his season even before the strike could. He was the unanimous MVP that year anyway, and he also finished second in 1999 and third in 1997. Devil Rays signed infielder Akinori Iwamura to a three-year, $7.7 million contract. Iwamura will make $1.8 million in 2007, $2.4 million in 2008 and $3.25 million in 2009. The club has a $4.25 million option for 2010 with a $250,000 buyout. Once the deal ends, Iwamura is expected to become a free agent, even though he won't have the requisite six years of service time. Iwamura is likely to play third base for the Rays. His power probably isn't going to translate so well to the U.S., so he might be below average offensively. However, he could make up for it with his glove. A switch to second base is a possibility later, especially if Evan Longoria gets off to a fast start in the minors. Cubs signed first baseman-outfielder Daryle Ward, who had been with the Braves, to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2008. |

I think those are two potentially good signings by the Red Sox, but it could also bite them. Donnely was lights out prior to his run in with The Miz, but wasn't he pretty off last season? If the Red Sox can instill some confidence and get him back up to the top of his game, he is a good guy. Romero seems like he is always streaky, but he has the potential to be a real solid setup man, and I definitely see him doing something well in the Red Sox system.

I keep hearing about this Melky Cabrera for Mike Gonzalas deal. I DON'T GET IT. Our bullpen is pretty stacked and Gonzalas has never thrown a meaningful pitch in his career. Melky Cabrera was a HUGE part of our success last year.

Yeah, don't understand it at all. Hopefully Cashman is just driving up the price for Boston because that deal makes no sense at all.

Kei Igawa's contract with the Yankees will be worth $20 million over four years, according to the New York Daily News.
The New York Times said yesterday it was $20 million for five years. We'll find out who was right when the deal is finalized, likely on Monday. According to the New York Post, there's nothing to the rumors that Randy Johnson would prefer to be dealt to a team closer to his home in Arizona. The Yankees would probably consider trading Johnson under the right circumstances, but it's unlikely anything will happen. GM Brian Cashman denied that Johnson had asked for a trade, as did one of Johnson's agents. "There is nothing coming out of our camp," agent Alan Nero said. "I don't know where rumors start." The New York Daily News says that the Yankees, Braves and Pirates haven't discussed a three-team Mike Gonzalez deal at all during the last few days. That's what we were hearing Friday before multiple reports Saturday made it sound like a deal wasn't far away. The Daily News says there might be more talks next week. However, if something does happen, it could end up being a two-team deal, with Gonzalez going to the Yankees and Melky Cabrera being surrendered in return. Instead of going to Pittsburgh, Adam LaRoche may yet go to Baltimore for Brian Roberts, according to the AP. White Sox signed catcher Toby Hall, who had been with the Dodgers, to a two-year, $3.65 million contract with a club option for 2009. Braden Looper is excited about entering spring training as a starting pitcher. "I'm giddy, really," he said. The left-handed hitters of the five other teams in the NL Central feel the same way. Looper likely will be used as a starter in spring training even if the Cardinals add another pitcher to their rotation. "He's durable. He's stronger," GM Walt Jocketty said. "He has three or four quality pitches that he could better use in a starting role. [Pitching coach] Dave Duncan feels very strongly that he has all the assets it takes to be a quality starter." Which is why he's made 17 starts in 713 appearances dating back to his college days. Discussions between the Pirates and Jeff Suppan's representatives have diminished in recent days, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The Pirates may be focusing on someone they have a better chance of signing, Joel Pineiro. The Giants and Brewers are the current favorites for Suppan, but there may be more suitors out there. Don't rule out the Jays. While the Tigers deny it, the Detroit Free Press believes Joel Zumaya may eventually be put into the rotation. The paper suggests that it might be a necessary step in keeping him healthy, as he's a maximum effort guy in the pen but would be forced to tone it down a bit as a starter. Zumaya was a starter in the minors and had plenty of potential in that role, but it's unlikely he'll be making a switch back anytime soon. He's probably the Tigers' closer of the future. |

Everyone already hates JD Drew in Boston, if they are going to sign an often injuried outfielder why not just bring back Trot Nixon? Everyone loves him here atleast. Plus it'd be a lot cheaper
Just a random thought about the Red Sox bullpen, do you guys think any of the young guys they had up last year could possibly turn it around "Detriot Tigers young guys" style? I can personally see Hansen and Declaremen pitching a lot better then they did last year. |

As for Johnson being traded, I know it's not gonna happen, but I don't think it would hurt their rotation very much because it's already ridiculous as it is with Wang/Moose/Pettite provided they all have good seasons. I think Johnson showed he's way past his prime last season regardless of his back problems, and he's not gonna add much to the team this year. Although, he is good as a 4th or 5th starter.

Wilpon, Minaya, and two others are heading to California to meet with Zito. And David Wright has essentially challenged Zito, saying "Why wouldn't you want to play here?"
I'm fucking antsy. Hopefully they don't give him any longer than 5 years, but I say do what you need to to sign him. Without him our rotation is shit. |

Jeremy Bonderman's four-year deal with the Tigers is worth $38 million, according to The Associated Press.
Giants signed first baseman Ryan Klesko, who had been with the Padres, to a one-year contract. Rangers signed RHP Eric Gagne, who had been with the Dodgers, to a one-year, $6 million contract. Marcus Giles is set to sign a one-year deal with the Padres, according to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. ![]() Phillies signed outfielder Jayson Werth, who had been with the Dodgers, to a one-year, $850,000 contract. ![]() ESPN's Buster Olney says the Yankees have been in contact with Mark Loretta about their opening at first base. Marlins GM Larry Beinfest said recently that he still sees Travis Bowyer as a closer of the future. The Cardinals' only offer to keep free agent Jeff Suppan was for less than $20 million over three years. Jeff Weaver is a better bet than Suppan to stay in St. Louis. The Brewers and Giants are the leading candidates for Suppan right now. If the Blue Jays are interested, they've been keeping it quiet lately. Brad Radke will announce his retirement at a press conference Tuesday. |
