No. He isn't. Listen, I'm not as dead set against him as many of my fellow podcasters are, but we have to show some honesty here. He is not nearly as over as he should be for the position that he's in. Much of it is because the hit in popularity he took by middling for a couple years due to the wellness strikes, but he is not really that over. It's clear that he knows what he's doing and knows how to be a main event star, but nobody is paying to see Randy Orton right now. For an 11 time champion, he is not drawing even close to what he should be. Like not even a reasonable fraction.

I will agree with that 100%. Along with his wellness issues, I think that's why he went so long without being the champ until a couple months ago: he doesn't need the belt to be over. He just is.

I'd like to bring up a sidepoint of what you said "nobody pays to see Orton".

Does that even exist anymore in general? People paid to see Stone Cold, Hogan, Rock. In my opinion fans nowadays buy a ticket to see the WWE as a whole, not one specific guy. Which says a lot about wrestling in its current state.

Yeah, I agree with Gertner in here. Randy Orton is over (as a face he was ridiculously over despite not doing much of anything) and the whole show seems to be constructed as a "team sport" more than ever.

I love the idea of Damien Sandow having a midget valet. It'd suit him perfectly and it'd be good to have a heel small guy to wrestle El Torito.

I always think of it in terms of "If this person was inexplicably fired today, what would the backlash be?" If Orton was fired for his 3rd wellness violation, it really wouldn't be all that big of a deal. Triple H would just find another corporate champion and everyone would move on. If Cena was fired, they would If have to completely restructure the entire company. If Bryan was fired today, there would be riots. That is the difference. If Punk was fired today, there would be lots of problems. Randy Orton is an 11 time champion and is relatively expendable. I don't know how much of a victory that is.

Does that even exist anymore in general? People paid to see Stone Cold, Hogan, Rock. In my opinion fans nowadays buy a ticket to see the WWE as a whole, not one specific guy. Which says a lot about wrestling in its current state.
People pay to see Cena, Mysterio, Punk, and Bryan. Other than them, I don't think there are many wrestlers who directly draw.

Personally, I'm one of the people who pays to see the product as a whole.

Again, I'd say the allure of Orton's potential is looooong past. He is accepted as something inevitable now, so the fans go along with it. I've never met a single person who can tell me they're into Orton for anything other than his orange, ink-stained body.

I truthfully skip most of Randy Orton's work when it's not with another of my favorites. I find his character to often be a bit of a snore. On a personal level, I wouldn't really care if he decided to retire. More power to the guy. I don't think his ability and his value can be denied, though. That being said, I do get the autopilot argument, and I do think that there are times where Orton just seems "there." But while he was just "there" as a face, he was so fucking over it wasn't funny. They wouldn't have been able to turn him heel against Sheamus earlier in the year because people wouldn't have cheered Sheamus over Orton.

The only other guys that I think would move the meter in TNA would be John Cena (in the biggest way possible), Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, Big Show, Rey Mysterio and maybe Dolph Ziggler and Alberto Del Rio. And The Undertaker and Kane, although they would have to use different gimmicks and it has zero percent chance of happening. I dunno. Orton is an 11 time champion and just seems like some guy. Doesn't seem to command the respect of somebody with such a resume.

And Noid. If Orton went to TNA absolutely nothing would happen. I'm positive of this. I think we've learned over the years that any one big acquisition isn't going to send TNA into the stratosphere. If Sting, Angle, or Hogan couldn't do it, Orton is certainly not going to.
