How would TNA fare against WrestleMania?

I've heard it suggested before, but what if TNA put on a live, 4 hour show on Spike directly against Mania?

Mania, recently, gets around a million buys. That's about 4 million less than what RAW draws in. So obviously, there would be a HUGE chunk of people not watching Mania that watch wrestling that night.

Obviously it wouldn't work this way this year, but if they built it up like a huge event over, say, a month, would it be wise for TNA to do something like this?

I don't think so, as just advertising that they're going up against a live PPV from the other guys would kill them ala WCW announcing Mick winning the title.

I was going to ask "why would they announce that", but then I realized it was TNA...

I don't think that it would take away that many sales from WWE, but it could grab alot of the casual fans that just want to watch wrestling and not pay for it on PPV. If it was a good enough of a show they could a better fan base going forward.

I would probably watch just because I don't pay for PPV's, and get sick of watching broken streams over an over on the net.

Yeah this is what I figured would happen. Hell no, they could never steal any buys from Mania, but there's a huge portion of the audience that wouldn't be watching but might be hyped up for Mania and want to watch some wrestling.

TNA could steal buys of casual fans who just want wrestling and would rather not pay $60 (or whatever it is now). It probably wouldn't make be a big deal to WWE, but it would definitely help TNA going forward, especially if the show is solid.

I'm just gonna settle for hoping TNA can learn to book a solid show. They only thing from them I've even been able to sit through was Styles/ Angle a few weeks ago. Loved it, but that was on the performers, not the company.

Wrestlemania gets a million buys, sure...there will also be tens of thousands of people at the show, tons of people having Wrestlemania parties I'm sure, as well as places like Hooters and other blast areas. So viewers will be a lot higher than actual buys.

TNA can't compete right now.

I for one would rather watch a main event singles match featuring any line up possible from Desmond Wolfe, AJ Styles, Kurt Angle, The Pope, and Jeff Hardy than Batista vs Cena.

If TNA Were touring regularly, Were live every show and could afford production values the size of WWE, had a bigger ring (Octagonal or Square, to me it makes no odds), took that stupid same level ramp back down and staged a mass cull of Vince Russo, Eric Bischoff, The Nasty Boys, Scott Hall, Sean Waltman, and Brian 'Pointless' Kendrick.

Employed Heyman, and stopped Jermery 'shit the bed' Borash being allowed to converse with other humans. I think they might do OK.

They could do OK.

It's a big ask granted, but BAH GAWD does the wrestling industry need it. This must be one of the lowest 'troughs' experienced since televised wrestling began.

True but they say it like its a fact that these half billion are watching it.

The ps3 is available to probably a few billion people yet i don't see Sony stating that with a "nudge nudge wink wink attitude" in commecials.

Sega tried that in an advert with the dreamcast stating something like upto 6 billion players but were forced to remove it. Wouldnt be suprised if wwf got slapped with the same decision on that intro.

well take me as an example. I will never in my right mind spend $50 on a PPV. And I'll never watch a stream of the show because the shit is a pain in the ass. So if I can't find a bar that shows Mania, I'll most likely tune into TNA that night.

I agree with this a lot. TNA can benefit a bit due to the rising costs of Wrestlemania and WWE ppvs for that one day but at the same time TNA needs a lot of work to put on a "Wrestlemania"-quality show for free in such a short period of time.

The major drawback is if TNA goes all out on a free show, it would make it harder to sell their normal PPVs or lose out on an event/match that would have generated huge sales (ex. Goldberg winning the title off of Hogan on Nitro instead of a ppv).

They seem to draw a fairly consistent 0.80 regardless of when they are on or what they are up against, so at least that. And while no one is going to choose to watch TNA over Wrestlemania, they could (with the right advertising) snag a few of the bored, non-ppv ordering WWE fans. If they do something dumb like only advertise on Impact, then yeah... not going to do better than the average Impact.

TNA should do this when WWE has a lesser PPV.

That was my point bud. I didn't say "it would be like WCW making this mistake", I said "WCW made this mistake"
