Who's the next underdog to make it big?
Part of the reason I love The Miz so much is his story. Coming from a humble background, he starts out at the bottom of the barrel only to climb to the top. A lot of guys can make it to the main-event and win the World Title, but by definition, only a rare few can overcome the odds or Cena their way to the top.
Who currently has the potential to rise to the top? Someone from NXT? A jobber from Smackdown? Who? It's time to make TPWW MEAT again! Quote:

I would really like it if Kaval made it to the top tier, but at the moment I don't see him reaching any higher than the IC title.
As far as complete underdogs go, I wouldn't mind seeing Yoshi Tatsu break through. He was on a hot run during the end of the ECW, and his recent reappearances gives hope that he may be used more often somewhere down the line. |

I hate David Otunga so fucking much. I would have no problem if his famous wife divorced him and they fired his ass and he went on a huge 10 day crack binge and OD'd in the Women's Bathroom at Denny's in a suburb of Topeka,Kansas.

I think the guys returning from injury will receive pushes that they may capitalise on. That means 2011 could be a great year for both Christian and Evan Bourne. But I'm also going to throw out John Morrison's name.
John Hennigan only ended up in the WWE after winning Tough Enough 3 in 2003. Over the last seven years, we've seen Hennigan evolve from being Eric Bischoff's assistant, changing his ring name every week, in a desperate attempt to use Hennigan; to him becoming one-half of possibly the greatest tag team in the modern era. As Johnny Nitro, Hennigan also experienced some relative mid-card success -- with two Intercontinental Title reigns, making him at this point already the most successful thing to ever come from Tough Enough (until The Miz). After Chris Benoit went nuts, Johnny Nitro got a chance to step up, and he metamorphisised into "John Morrison" as ECW Champion, and since then has been part of arguably another contender for greatest tag team in this modern era, and had some MOTY candidates. I think 2011 is as good a year as any for Morrison to break out. |

So far these are the wrestlers that have been mentioned that can in no way be considered underdogs:
John Morrison, Kofi Kingston, Kane, Wade Barrett, Dave Otunga Although I believe any of them could "break out", and I agree with Noid that we're likely to see Morrison break out with his feuding with Sheamus. However, nobody listed would really rise against all odds as The Miz has done. Christian I think would be able to pull off the underdog rise to power that I'm talking about and there are a few guys who are currently on the "low-card" aka they're currently being jobbed out, Kaval and Yoshi come to mind. |

I see R-Truth doing big things in 2011. He's buddies with Orton and Cena, so I'm thinking he'll get a decent push soon
But then again, I don't know if you'd consider him an underdog. Maybe if he went up against The Nexus, basically taking over Cena's role, since he'll be busy going up against Punk soon |

alot of you guys are missing the point of this thread, and naming people who have held gold, received pushes, and had some share of the spotlight. i always saw big zeke as a champion like contender. but as far as people who are basically at the mix circa rookie status, i would love to see zach ryder for one get new music, and get a huge push. and even tho a ry is technically in the spotlight and a household name, basically his matches are jobber status. i think he has it all, in ring skill, charisma on the mic, and he is entertaining. would love to see them utilize him alot more.

R-Truth's background is a mystery to me. I'd have to look into it before giving him that title. Although...he is black. Might as well say that his race qualifies him as an underdog.

Derrick Batemen from NXT right now. He is insanely charasmatic, and has a unique look, that isn't too far from WWE's image though.

Anyone in NXT other than Wade and Otunga I could think of as "underdogs".
Also feel the same about Ted and Cody to some extent. In spite of their parentage I feel like they earned their spots. |

He already gets good crowd reactions so it wouldn't take much to repush him to get his "breakout" moment. I do agree more on Christian being a good candidate since he has everything needed to be a quality main eventer but he never got a real chance to shine (not counting time as ECW champion). |

Are we talking kayfabe underdogs, or guys that will overcome backstage environments and such? The stories of some of the guys mentioned that have been disqualified are pretty
"underdoggish," in my opinion. For example: That Morrison is where he is in the first place is pretty impressive. Didn't he first show up on WWE TV not knowing what a spinaroonie was? Heath Slater is one I am going to throw in there. Yeah, he's involved with Nexus, but at the same time has never been a focal point of the group. He doesn't get much IWC support, but it's clear someone backstage likes him. But basically, Slater seems sort of opposed naturally to being a main event force. He's got a weird look, he's not the biggest guy, he's not the best in the ring and his voice makes him sound goofy -- but I expect him to do better than most people think he will. R-Truth is someone I consider to be an underdog, too. There's so much against him that many attribute to holding some guys down. He was a large part of TNA for a while, he can't compete in Canada, and yes, he's black. |

I was expecting the WWE to write-off Alex Riley after his DUI. A punt from Randy Orton would have done it. The guy is really talented, so I doubt the WWE would release him, but some "behaviour management" style booking was something I saw coming for him.
But the guy has stayed around, has worked his ass off these past couple of weeks, and is playing the role he is meant to be playing perfectly. He's lucky and he's fine where he is. |
