Having seen Akira and tons of other anime, I'll have to make this comparison:

1) Unlike other anime, the characters don't have gigantic eyes. Also, unlike other anime, there aren't giant robots or sappy romances.
2) The mood of Akira influenced quite a few American animation ventures. "Batman: Beyond" was influenced by Akira. (Like the Joker Gang -- who were clowns on motorbikes --- and the opressive mood of the city.) I'm pretty sure Aeon Flux was directly influenced by Akira.
3) However, the English dub is horrible.
4) Also, like many anime, the story is vague, overly philosophical, and leaves many plot threads open. Think the "Matrix" series.
5) Many of my friends who are not anime fans love "Akira". Take that advice as you will.

I'm not a big anime fan, and I love Akira. With that said, I know a few people who don't like it as it's somewhat nonsensical and confusing, mainly because there was suppose to be more. I think it's going to come down to what you like in movies, and what you don't like in anime.

Akira is amazing.

I’m no fan of anime/manga but it is a movie that is worth watching for animation that still looks amazing today.

Love the action, the bikes, the mass destruction and nasty psychic bastards.
