when did fans become assholes?
with the hoopla over the crowd trying to be the show in Chicago and failing miserably, and with watching old raws on the network it got me wondering....when did crowds get vocal and what is the biggest cause for it?

this old raw from 93 has bob backlund against kimchee in the middle of the show, a match that today would be completely shit on by most crowds as glorified squash matches have been moved away from. but the crowd just sits there fat dumb and happy eating it up

was it ECW? did those vocal crowds leave the bingo hall and infiltrate into bigger cities and arenas and did word spread that it's ok to start chants of whatever off beat bullshit you can

was it fans got spoiled during the MNW's? did that option of having 2 shows to watch and competitive drive from both companies cause the fans to be bratty once there became only one show in town? now that they wont leave the product because they once liked it they just bitch vocally?


or was it the internet? has the IWC "grown up" and now that age group is out there buying tickets to shows and will do whatever they can to make the show about them

also what was the first PPV or live crowd you guys remember that started a chant that didn't follow the script or took over the show?

The random chanting might be new but crowds acting like assholes go way back to the territory days.

Its more frequent now because of how big social media has become to get people aware and organize stuff like this.

I blame Social Media. The world is full of people trying to be "famous" for 15 seconds and WWE essentially invites these people to interact with their constant pushing of hashtags.

It's a mixture of the same story lines and formulas. Tatanka can't cure all the pain, but he helps a bit. When people a week or so in advance can plan and come together on a medium, stuff like hijacking is created.

I've laughed it off mostly, but I do respect those that are passionate at the end of it all to voice their opinion. One if the reasons I don't go batshit on it is because the PG product was around when I started watching and I have 2 boys that watch RAW with me and can do without wrestlers shitting on cars and raping corpses. I don't think they're ready for all that yet.

Just looking at WWE here...

Perhaps I have blinders on, but I think part of the whole "asshole crowd" craze is due to some of the booking as of late. If WWE was in an evolution era slump, or a Pre-additude era, or any other time where the ratings and PPV buys were dismal, a guy as over as Daniel Bryan would have been handed the title on a silver platter by the reanimated corpse of Vincent James McMahon.
The fact is the booking isn't that great at the moment, and the company is in good shape (with stocks being reported at an all time high a few days ago). So the company can say "You're going to eat our shit and like the taste. Here's another cock tease of Daniel Bryan almost getting the title, but instead Randy walks away with it. And here's some more Vitamin Cena for good measure." What are the fans not doing? They're not proving the WWE wrong. The fans are getting restless, and they're now goofing off more and more to amuse themselves... but they're not tuning out of the product.
So it's kinda like the fans are saying "Ouch, WWE cut me! I'm going to pour salt in my own wound to show how much it hurts."

Fans haven't been getting what they've wanted, and they're letting WWE know. The Daniel Bryan chants are the crowds telling WWE "this is our guy, regardless of what you think you're doing." The CM Punk chants aren't fans being assholes, they're fans literally saying "we want Punk." In a more drawn-out sense, they're saying "we want Punk, and we don't have him because you didn't keep him happy." The random chants, the Randy Savage ones, or the ones for the commentators, are basically more interesting versions of "boring" chants. If social media is in any way a part of this, it's only because the guys sitting at home saying "man fuck this, Daniel Bryan should be at the top" now know that everyone else agrees with them, so if they start chanting his name, they're not going to look like some lone asshole. And if your'e going to "blame" social media, then you have to "blame" WWE for dry humping Twitter, Tout, and the WWE app so damn much.

I truly don't get the fans. They look back at the 80's like they were the greatest thing ever, but when Daniel Bryan is booked like he would be in the 80's they freak out. Do you know how many ass kickings week after week Dusty Rhodes got by the Horsemen before getting the one up? A lot and it lasted a while. Fans are now conditioned to have angles end after a couple months. I'm enjoying the whole Daniel Bryan angle. It's booked very old school. The overall product is as good as it has ever been. The matches have been top notch. Look at Monday Night. The Wyatt's vs the Shield was amazing. Cesaro has had amazing matches as has Sheamus, Bryan, Christian, Del Rio. They want everything all at once, but then bitch when angles are booked like ADHD.

When the whole "keeping Bryan down" thing began I was pissed about how Raw had the same ending every week for a month and Bryan was being booked to look like an ineffectual jackass. The long-term business has been very good, and Bryan has stood the (intentional or not) test to see if he could survive as a crowd favorite after being left out of the main event for a while. Orton/Cena take ten thousand has been very bland and uninteresting, and the Royal Rumble was the worst in years, but I still think they will end up somewhere good out of most of this.

Additionally, I love how they have actually been treating the Shield breakup as a slow burn instead of the usual load-blow. Monday was fantastic; Reigns is the breakout guy and Amrbose is the prima donna, so clearly things will blow up between them and... oh wait, Rollins is the problem child now. Unexpected and sweeeeet. Really hoping it goes past Mania. Rollins in a title match at SummerSlam would be damn fine.

It just annoys me when guys like Sheamus vs Christian have a great match on Raw with an interesting heel turn and the fans chant "this is awful". And then they bitch when wrestlers act like they don't care anymore. I wonder why.

This has gone sort of in a different direction than just trying to figure out when fans got so vocal and organized chants before a live event but I think it speaks to something here where everything goes in different tangents. Maybe overall wrestling fans are adhd. While gertner has horror taste he is quite right. Booking has gone very well and with no competition each monday why not slow burn things and draw it out because there is never a reason to hot shot the title now.

The overall complaint that's valid I believe is what someone pointed out a few weeks back, there needs to be writers for the mid card guys to give them some purpose and direction

Lol I brought up a while ago that Vince Russo might not be the worst idea to have come back working under Vince. He at least gave the mid card guys something to do. Didn't make sense all the time but it was better than "wrestler A has a match with wrestler B and that's it".

I agree gertner, not that we need things on a pole match for the mid card to do but under card fueds are great at times. All you get now is if we break up the shield, the Americans and the prime time players it gives us three self written matches so let's do that even tho we have nothing for titus O'Neil to do and it will weaken our already weak tag division
