Help me re-organize the "Staff Picks" section at my video store
OK, I am basically trying to re-organize it. I have room on the shelves for 70 movies. These are the ones that are definitely in. This list has 53 movies (21 of which we also have on DVD), so that leaves room for 17 more. NOTE: This does not include comedies. They have their own staff picks section.
12 Angry Men Adaptation (DVD) American Beauty (DVD) American History X Barton Fink Being John Malkovich Boiler Room Boogie Nights Bound Blood Simple Blue Velvet Bully (DVD) Clockwork Orange Casino Carlito's Way Donnie Brasco (DVD) Dog Day Afternoon Do the Right Thing Eyes Wide Shut (DVD) Full Metal Jacket (DVD) Fargo Goodfellas (DVD) Glengarry Glen Ross Happiness Insomnia (DVD) Jackie Brown Kids Lolita Mulholland Dr. (DVD) Memento (DVD) Magnolia Menace II Society Miller's Crossing Of Mice and Men Once Upon a Time in America One Hour Photo (DVD) The Others (DVD) Pulp Fiction (DVD) Punch-Drunk Love (DVD) Rain Man Reservoir Dogs (DVD) Raging Bull (DVD) Run Lola Run Sling Blade Shining (DVD) Scarface (DVD) Sea of Love Storytelling True Romance Taxi Driver (DVD) Vanilla Sky (DVD) Welcome to the Dollhouse Y Tu Mama Tambien (DVD) NOW... This is the list of movies that have previously been in the section. Keep in mind they are not all necessarily my picks, but yeah, this is what I have to choose from that has been there before... Basically, which movies would you definitely add out of the list below? Or which movies would you add that are NOT on the list above? Keep in mind that it all depends on if we have them at the store or not, so if it's some really rare shit, we probably won't. Anyway, suggest some stuff. 2001 Space Oddyssey 400 Blows American Psycho And Justice For All As Good as it Gets Bad Lieutenant Born on the 4th of July Bronx Tale Basic Instinct Devil's Advocate Drugstore Cowboy Elephant Man Face/Off Falling Down Fatal Attraction Fight Club Forrest Gump Few Good Men Gladiator Hard Eight Hate Honeymoon Killers In the Company of Men Jungle Fever King of New York LA Confidential Lost Highway Ocean's 11 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest People vs. Larry Flint Primal Fear The Professional Psycho Rear Window Rounders Requiem for a Dream Stand by Me Shawshank Redemption Saving Private Ryan Seven Silence of the Lambs Sleepers Saturday Night Fever Serpico Scent of a Woman Time to Kill Usual Suspects You Can Count on Me I am also trying to order these off eBay: Amores Perros Paths of Glory Freaks Eraserhead Audition Ichi the Killer Show Me Love Last edited by Triple A; 08-06-2004 at 04:17 AM. |

Donnie Darko - Nah.
Enter The Dragon - Nah. Forrest Gump - Yeah but everyone already knows about it. Good Will Hunting - Meh. Rocky - See Forrest Gump All The President's Men - Haven't seen it. Almost Famous - Meh. Bowling For Columbine - Still a new release. I will add it though. The Boondock Saints - Nah. Catch Me If You Can - Good but there are better movies that can fill the spot. The Count Of Monte Cristo (2002) - Nope. Finding Forrester - Meh. The Fugitive - Meh. Kill Bill Vol. 1 - Probably will eventually (still new). |

Ugh. Weird. Everytime I look over the list and think of something, I look back at it and it's already there.
Those are good picks. Randomly, one I'm thinking of is Breathless. Same guy who wrote/directed 400 Blows wrote it. I thought it was pretty good but not really as good as some of those. I dunno, drawing a blank. I wish the video store I work at had staff picks. They used to before I was there and now we just don't have the room.

I dunno, wasn't crazy about Breathless. Oooh, he invented the jump cut.
![]() Which of the ones on the second list would you definitely add, if any? Also, how big is your store? |

Haven't seen Rounders, Lost Highway, And Justice For All, or Primal Fear ( Yeah I know. Just took it out the other day so I'll get around to it soon).
but I'd say: Forrest Gump, A Bronx Tale, Cuckoo's Nest, Se7en, Rear Window, Fight Club, then either Gladiator or Stand By Me. |

Um...it's really not all that big. I dunno how to describe it. It's in a little like mini-mall type area in my town. With all the HBO shows now and stuff, and we have the AFI Top 100 list separate, we needed to eliminate things like staff pix.

Do you have every AFI top 100 movie?

I think we had a section for that when it first came out but we got rid of it eventually. Before I worked there. A bunch of movies have the Top 100 sticker on them.

I just worked today and I'm actually not sure. I think so, all except Birth of a Nation which I've never seen anywhere in my life. I know that much for sure. Possibly one or two others.

So you guys probably have a lot of rare shit, eh.
We have a fucking gigantic drama section, but like 75% of the movies are so shitty. We have liek 15,000 titles or something. Dunno. |

We have some, not sure if it's a lot compared to other places. I know we don't have many the obscure horror flicks that hardcore horror fans like. Like Cannibal Holocaust, Zombie etc. I'd like to get some.
If you know you can get your hands on any rare movies you should def. put them in your store's inventory. If people know you have rare stuff they'll keep coming back. |

Yeah, I wish I owned the place. I would buy so much shit it's not even funny. I already have ordered about 20 movies off eBay for the store with my own money and just put them in. My boss is an idiot. He is Chinese and can barely even pronounce the movie titles.

The owner of the place can be a dumbass and an ass sometimes too. Well, usually, actually. If we feel the store needs something, mainly just DVD now, we'll write it on a list and the manager will order them. But when the owner sees the list sometimes he'll just be like "that'll never rent" and won't let her order it. Pisses me off.

How is your store set up? Like the new releases, do you put DVDs and VHS together and spread each copy out like Blockbuster or what.
Also, what about your old DVDs and tapes? Combined? Or do you have the old DVDs in their own section. |

The wall that goes around the store is the New Release wall. The DVDs are next to their video counterparts.
Older DVDs are separate from older VHS but my co-worker told me yesterday that while he was at the other store getting our checks, the owner told him we're going to combine the older VHS and DVDs. I'll be back at school by then so thankfully I'll miss that hellish transition. |

Do you have a lot of old DVDs? Like does the owner buy a bunch of old movies (like the staff pick ones I listed)? My owner is an idiot and won't buy any old movies on DVD. All the old ones we have now are from the last owner.

Yeah. The "classics" we have are far less but it's building. But as for the ones you listed, I'd say we have most of them.
I don't think we have Of Mice and Men, Jungle Fever, Hate, Honeymoon Killers, Freaks, Ichi the Killer, Show Me Love, Audition, 400 Blows, Carlito's Way, Casino, And Justice For All, or Lost Highway on DVD. Some of those (Audtion, Freaks, Ichi, possibly even 400 Blows) I don't think we have even on VHS. That's just from memory though so I'm not positive. |

Damn, nice. God, my boss is an idiot. Should just spend a couple hundred bucks and buy at least the staff picks on DVD.
How much are your prices? QUESTIONS KEEP COMING. Also, is your old DVD section like in a small space, bookshelved, or are they in a pretty large space (equal to VHS) and faced up or what |

All DVDs, new or old, are $3.98 (that's w/ tax included).
If it's wicked brand new, like say, Whole Ten Yards or Hidalgo, it's 3 nights. If it's still on the new wall but not brand new, I.E. Matrix 2 & 3, Master and COmmander, and more recently Secret Window, it's 7 nights. All brand-new and semi-new DVD and VHS are $3.98 Older DVDs, while same price, are 7 nights. Older VHS are $2.93 for 7 nights. Brand new/ semi-new kids movies are also $3.98, which I get bitched at about by yuppie parents sometimes, but people, I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER IT. Older kids movies are 99 cents for 7 nights. But kids older DVDs are still $3.98 $2.00 a day late fee. Kids movies are $1.00 a day late fee. Um...the older (catalog) DVD section is not as big as VHS but obviously is and will continue to grow. They're bookshelved, if we're thinking of the same thing. But if there are numerous copies we'll face them front usually. Or while I am alphabetizing, I'll face front my favorite movies. |

Good stuff.
New releases here (VHS and DVD, movies about a year in release) and ALL DVDs - 2.75 (1 night), 3.50 (2 nights) Old VHS - 1.99-2.99 (5 nights). I am gradually changing them all to $1.99 though. I told him to make all old kids movies 99 cents. He doesn't wanna. Gay. |

Also, the fact that our old DVDs are only 2 days max is terrible. I keep telling him to change it to 5 days but NOOOO.

Yeah it's basically just me and him. My other friend is supposed to work all day Saturdays and Sundays but he barely works anymore because he is shooting a movie. He is the one who went to NYU.

Yeah about the VHS prices. Old DVDs should be like 3.50 for 5 days, IMO. No one complains about the 2 day thing for new releases though.

I dunno, around here you get new releases for 5 days VHS or DVD for only like $3.79, and all old VHS (think DVD too) movies for .99 to $1.50 depending on how old it is for 7 days.

New releases for 5 days is retarded really and would kill our business because as soon as every copy was rented out (which is usually in the first couple of hours), we would have no copies for the next 5 days.
Also, most people choose 1 day. Like 80%. |

Yeah, that's only for like Hollywood Video where they have 29726 copies of all the new releases so I wasn't suggesting you do that.

Devil's Advocate Fight Club Gladiator People vs. Larry Flynt Primal Fear Shawshank Redemption Seven Sleepers I would also add... The Sixth Sense Pi The Matrix (part one) The Rock Gone in 60 seconds Tombstone That's all I can think of right now. |
