Wrestling is not nearly as big as it was when the Rock was in his prime, and Jerico really isn't as big as the Rock was, but I think he is kind of playing the role that the Rock used to. When the Rock was in the WWF he was the face of the company, both inside and out of it. Now I think that position has kind of gone to Jericho, even though Jericho really isn't the main eventer that the Rock is. With wrestlers, you have to know going in that a lot of the guys out there were not really the "cool guys" growing up, but some you can just kind of tell that they were. The Rock being one, Shawn Michaels maybe, and Jericho just comes off as the same type of guy. These are the kind of guys that are able to go outside of the wrestling world and still be known. Guys that you might see on commercials or MTV or stuff like that.
The wrestling world and the rest of the pop culture world are very far apart. When Stone Cold was the biggest name in the wrestling industry, you would never see him make a cameo at the VMA's or anything. You never see the Undertaker outside of a WWF event. Even Vince McMahon himself to an extent. I think Jericho has kind of become wrestlings "guy", the guy who acts as the WWF diplomat to the pop culture world. The guy that people see and can just say "Oh thats Chris Jericho, he's the man". He may not be as famous as the Rock, but to the outside world he is the face of the WWE. Even though he may not be the world champion or the most popular by wrestling fans, but he has established himself as more then just a wrestler. Dont Mess With Kids |
